APBA introduces Formula Spec Class
Eastpointe, Michigan - Boat racing in America goes back to the turn of the last century, and the American Power Boat Association is the organization that has provided leadership to the sport since 1903. But never before has the APBA taken such an active role in making boat racing available to racing enthusiasts who want to see if boat racing is for them. A brand-new initiative from the APBA addresses enthusiasts who are ready to goracing and want to find a way to enter the sport in an affordable way.
To achieve this, a new class of 100 mph tunnel-hull race boats, the Formula SpecClass, has been created. This turn-key boat, motor and trailer package features an emissions-compliant Mercury Racing 60 HP 4-stroke outboard motor and spec-design hull. Every Formula Spec Class boat will be identical in every respect, except color.
The all-composite hull, designed by championship-winner Gary Pugh and builtexclusively by Revolution Boats of Modesto, California, is constructed to the highest standards, insuring that every boat is the same. The design, plugs and molds for these boats will be APBA property to make sure that they will all be identical–now and in thefuture. Templates will be used at the race sites to make sure that no boat’s hull has been modified. The engines, specially prepared by Mercury Racing for the APBA, utilize production parts and are EPA-compliant.
The cost? Less than $20,000, including a “race-ready” boat with on-board driver airsystem, brand new Mercury Racing 4-stroke engine and purpose-built single-axle trailer. As noted earlier, the propeller used at the races will be the property of APBA.Current schedules indicate the first boats will be available for shipment from Revolution’s Modesto, California plant in the fall of 2009.
