      Fiberglass BU's

Tim is right... It was Dave Rodat, of Oshkosh who built the round bottom glass boats from a mold taken off (Highjacked, Tim?) a Hedlund. He made most full width, with wood sides and decks, and also built at least one that was trimmed slightly narrower... that one had a black bottom.

Most "Hunter's" ended up with a row of screws where the sides met the bottom forward of the transom, as they tended to come apart there, at the wood / fiberglass joint.

I also remember Stover having both a Hedlund and a Rinker on the trailer... but he was mostly running the Hedlund around here, in WI.

"Turtle Express" was Her Name...Morehouse Boat

I had a very FAST 36 Runabout....That thing "HAULED"...Had a Johnson with a CARY prop....It had a steering wheel that was about 24" in diameter...I could "BRODY" around them corners.....like Jack the Bear.....(1960)...

Hell, at the Winternationals 1970, I was third in 36 with my D Desilva...Max McPeek and Johnny Puesto (Same JohnPuesto who ruined runabout with the side fins...)..stepped my 36 UP and ran F Runabout with two in the boat......The DeSilva Boys never forgave me ...ONE Chrysler 36 out there with 11 Lon Steve's Six bangers and Konigs....

Need me a "SIT DOWN" boat that is slower than my Classic Outboard 2.0..

But Curly William has a Tohatsu D, and we have "TALKED" of making The Top of Michigan Marathon..............but talk is cheap!!!

                        Gents,
I want to refresh this discussion to help promote the Stock Classics "special race" held as part of this year's National Championship Marathon. This is a great opportunity for all of you to participate in the spectacle we know as the Top'O Michigan Marathon. You won't need any special equipment or big tanks. Any traditional short course runabout will be great. The majority of the course we have selected is smooth water as it winds through the highest density of spectators in the community of Indian River and beyond. Check out the rules for Stock Classic in your APBA rulebook....they are very simple...no weights, no measurements, no inspection criterion. All you must do is run a stock engine (A, B, 22, C, 36, or D) that was built before 1983 and is in it's stock form. Of particular note is that there is no National Championship in Stock Classic so this race is a "special race" as defined by APBA. What this means is that if you are retired or don't have a current APBA race license, you may join APBA for a "single event membership" and race both days (both heats). All other APBA equipment and safety rules apply. Specifications for helmets, cut-suits, throttles, kill switches apply. THIS IS YOUR CHANCE. Call me at 740-319-5040 if you need some encouragement! Mike Marshall, Raceboat 61-S

                          Classic Marathon info

I am making plans to run the classic marathon at Indian River, MI this summer and need some advice regarding accomodations in the area. We need something near the pits that is wheel chair accessible and can handle an extended family of about 6 to 10 people. If anyone from the area has any recommendations; please let me know so we can make reservations.
I will be getting my 1978 B/25 Hammercraft out of mothballs and have a 25SS Merc on order from the local foot doctor. Thanks in advance for any help.

Another good reason for me not to race this stupid race this year! I could just watch and take pictures of one of my child-hood heroes!

55H and a Reese utility. That's what we've got. Maybe on the way to the Nats, we'll do the Classic. How much fuel will a run-of-the-mill 55H use for that Classic course? Yeah.... this aint no test... anybody that says 2 gals will do it I know they want me to run out of gas!!

And... don't any of youse forget about the NE Marathon championship at Haverhill MA in August. It's going to be approx 30 miles on the Merrimack River.. right thru downtown Haverhill and sponsored in large part by the Haverhill Yacht Club who put on one heckuva a cookout and beerfest, not to mention things-in-thongs down on the docks cheering the boats on. Just one photo op after another... bring yer significant other.

CBF has a commendable idea with their totally reasonable Classic membership fee. Let's face it... us kneelers and sleepers are becoming "classics" in our own right. We need all the comraderie we can get... we aint going this way again (that I know of) and I've seen enough 'virgins' in my lifetime to convince me that boat racing is now far more important than....err...ahh... than 'virgins'..! I'm more into 'tried-and-true' at this stage.
