  • Region participation in J Committee

Thanks to the efforts of many people to make the Merc 15 available for J and A we've seen a decent increase in J entries. I wonder if it isn't time for the present J committee to be expanded to include region representation. At least those regions with J entries ought to be part of the group making decisions.

Just my thoughts on the matter. Anyone else?

Perhaps the J classes are increasing in members because the small group leading the commission is exactly that, SMALL and knowledgable?? Sometimes to many in the mix isn't always a good thing!

    Just a thought.

I agree with Matt. The system in place now is a good one and is directly responsible for the success of the J Category. Leave it alone!

BTW: this statement should not be construed as a ringing endorsement of absolutely everything the J Committee does- just most of it. Eddie.

Can I add if I may here....I'm one of those very frustrated J dads, as we left the class from our failures and moved to AXS and A....I have my own suggestions about that for a different discussion and different day....

Said that, I will stand by this.....It is critical that each club designate a dad or two as mentors, set up people, diagnosis people for those new J drivers. I realize in lots of cases back east, the families are the mentors, but these people should be in place along with the J program of each region. It is also critical to get as much encouragement from the old timers in the sport as need be. And there is no reason any kids boat should not plane, no reason for time to test with the APBA props to be denied as we have experienced on numerous occasions in region 12.

          Matt & Ed,
I would agree that the kind of effort that has taken place up to now was probably best handled by a small group. However, we're dealing with four J classes here. There are still a number of details to be ironed out, eg throttle linkage, thermostats, gearfoot contour plates, prop availability, rings, bearings, to name a few. Do we want to keep this motor "stock"? I suggest we do.

With the cost of putting a J class boat in the water tipping the $5 thou bucket it would be best to make each region part of the decision making process. Makes for happier campers. for that l o n g run.

Ed....There should be in a member run organization, member representation. Like that of which you fought so hard to defend.

Matt....a few is probably better, that way you don't have to volunteer or get involved, you can just rock back in your easy chair and criticize everything that is done by the few to help you.
