  • OMC A/J Pistons

Can someone tell me what pistons (aftermarket) I should order for our OMC engines. I found out that the pistons are no longer available from OMC, STD or .030

I need to rebuild some motors for 2009.

    Thanks

That is one of the items that will be brought up at the nationa meeting. I believe that both Trolian and Brent have done some testing and investigation into what we should use.

      Final Decision.....

      Jeff,

I can assure you that as soon as it is approved I will make it known the piston assembly of chose. Rest assured you will be able to buy 2 new piston & ring assemblies for less that what a single piston & ring assembly cost you @ the dealer.

          Sea-Way sold out of pistons?

For alternatives, Napa has anything you need, just not yet legal.

            OMC A/J Pistons

Thanks guys, maybe SORC can look at .040 over pistons as well. That would save some dead .030 blocks.

You can resleve the block or run .40 over in the Mod FA class. So the blocks aren't dead yet!

That makes too much sense. I proposed it over 5 years ago. Shot down like a 1 winged seagull! Happy New Year. Eddie.

I have new sets of both STD and .030" OEM OMC pistons if anyone is interested....never did get my "A" stuff back together. I think I might have a block or two as well if I can dig them up.

Resleeving is epensive. I see no problem boring the engine to .040 as long as pistons are available for everyone to buy. This engine is probably the most economical way into Stock outboard racing, and we need to keep it that way. And while we're at it, lets dump the factory decal and paint rules. Besides, it's now Bomb-Bar-Dee-Yea!!

Heck, I have the 4 cycle version of the OMC A motor that runs just as fast....Decals do wonders!

                        40 Over

I think 40 over would gain you an edge over say a standard bore engine. Everyone already bores to 30 over to get some speed, along with several other modifications.

I also do NOT feel it is the most economical way to get into Stock. The Yamato 102, 302 is priced far less than even a used OMC, and less than half of a Merc new.

Dave: They bore it 30 over because the bore is not straight when it is standard (not even when you used to be able to buy a new replacement block) and 30 over was the only oversize piston made by OMC. The engine goes faster 30 over, not because its 30 over, but because the bore is then straight. Ten thousandths more will not make any difference.

BTW: the mechanics who get work in doing re-sleeving and those that support them will now disagree with that last sentence. Stand by....
