The pipe was from a jet ski. Anthony McCulloch was always concerned that the distance to the cylinders was not equal, but I think equal length was not necessary ... like the CanAm race cars with unequal length intake runners trying to get a wider power band.
The motor had a lot of other internal modifications like hand made cylinder heads and a custom front with carbs about twice as big as the originals.
The motor and rig had promise, but was severely hobbled by FE rules that required use of OMC carbs. The carbs had a very hard time tracking with the mixture demand that varied wildly as the pipe's effect came and went. Some other carbs like Mukinis would probably work better if allowed at the drag races.Last edited by sam; 12-22-2008, 05:57 PM.

If the 497s had been restricted to the OEM exhaust plate, as Kennny Rosado originally ran, then the OMC twin in this configuration could have been competitive in FEH. It did have a lower CofG than the triple, was some what lighter, and had goobs of torque.Brian Hendrick, #66 F

When it did run, it was somewhat in the hunt. A decent triple still beat it fairly easily. In order to make that twin competitive with a triple, it needed much more modification then allowed by any rules. It is a ton cheaper to simply build a triple than to spend nearly 10K on a twin, I beleive that is what that guy charged to build you an engine. You supplied all the parts as well.
I have seen a few twins with chambers, and to date I don't think I have seen one win a main event race. Maybe on the west coast, as I have not been able to make it out there yet.Dave Mason

John Sharp played with a 45 with chambers on and off for a couple years but went back to a 3 cyl. He probably can give more insight to its strengths and weaknesses. I think he played with several different exhaust set ups. I also think he played with the two barrel carbs but couldn't get them to work.

Here is one I've been playing with. Less reciprocating mass has to produce more rpm's, it just has to. The three holer will make more torque because it has more displacement. The 45 has a much much longer con rod than the three holer. 70hp omc has a very short rod. lots of voo doo surrounding the OMC stuff. 50 hp isnt really 50 hp if you put a Mercury and an OMC next to eachother(unless you live in Canada). and the mod 50 was a production motor but it is not legal in feh. If I can find a reasonably priced 250 boat I will run my stinger pipe 45 this year in FEH. This was a fishing motor when I started everything you see I made here. I even made the mold and cast my own filler blocks for the exhaust. I have made improvements since this picture was taken. I built the correct pipe and pipe ring. At Sharptown MD John Runne ran Anthony's rig against the CSH's. John met the C's at the clock in the first heat and lapped them all in 3 laps. Seems to me he was looking at the roostertails of the stragglers a second time when he took the checkered flag. No way was the speed "average dmod"
(Anyone besides John remember what happened and why in the second heat )

I remember Tim Kurz running FEH with a stock looking 45 engine at a race in Mio Mi and totally dominate the field.He was running a pink boat and he was hitting 93mph.I had a chance to buy that rig and i wish i would have.It was VERY fast.He told me the engine would not be legal in 45 tunnel but it looked like it just came off a tunnel.I have video of him at the mio race i should dig it out.This was around 1993.Bob

To promote the 45 as a Stock hydro motor, OMC had a demonstration boat, a 12+ foot B&H boat with a stock motor and a conservative set up. You could simply sign the release and take it out for a couple laps. It ran 89 mph with great acceleration and safe enough to let ASR drivers out in it. After the stock guys turned down the motor, the boat ended up with Jerry Wienandt. Both he and Chuck Petersen won FEH Nationals a number of times with it running Jerry's trick 650 Merc 3-carb triple. Some awesome races at Dayton with Wienandt and Mason going at it.

We have been watching a pair of OMC looper twins run as Dmods in Canada for the last two seasons.
The CBF [probationary] rule was open tower and lower unit, but stock power head, carbs and exhaust plate. The power head spec as 'deposited' was just a copy of the OMC 45ss spec.
They have won a few races on short courses.
Generally they seem to be down on top end compared to a good 44"mod,
but accelerate as well or better. With closed exhust and stock carbs, I doubt they would ever beat a good Nats motor.
The reason the twin was allowed in CBF was to permit an inexpensive motor in Dmod, in order to support the class, as 44" entrys were dwindling.
Q? -the stock 45SS is no longer competitive in FEH Would it dominate Dmod ?
