The World Championships on Lake Alfred, Florida were a great success for the European drivers that made the trip, although LOBMBC driver Paul Jillings had a disappointing weekend. He was forced to retire from the final two heats of the World 0-250 run on Sunday with a damaged hull, He took tenth place overall from a sixth and a ninth place secured on Saturday with a waterlogged hull. Although overnight repairs were made, he still had problems on Sunday.
One of the favourites to take World titles, Luigi Colombi (Italy) had a bad crash on Wednesday whilst testing on another lake in the vicinity and was hospitalised. This prevented him from achieving a third World title in 0-125 in successive years with this GSC hull. He was also entered in 0-250 where he is the current European Formula 250 champion.
The Chinese although entered failed to appear, but 19 drivers took part in the 0-125 qualifying. Each driver individually made a beach start and completed three quarters of a lap to determine the qualifying time, the clock starting on the dropping of the green flag. Billy R.Allen from Massachusetts USA qualified fastest with his kneeler at 47.40 seconds. European Formula 250 champion Francesco Marsala (Italy) 47.44 secs with Giuseppe Rossi 48.83 secs. ahead of Attila Hencz (Slovakia) 49.58 secs in the Bazinsky hull that won Formula OSY 400 this year. Salvatore Chiuri (Italy) and Rene Behncke (Germany).
In 250 qualifying Alessandro Cremona (Italy) 40.22 secs with the GRM was beaten on the very last run by VRP powered Rene Behncke (Germany) to pole position with a time of 39.95 secs. Salvatore Chiuri headed Max Cremona and Demmler racer Ilkka Rytkonen (Finland) . J.P.Jedwabny was the best of the Americans, then the two Andick boats of Olle Dickfors (Sweden) and Paul Jillings (GB) 41.96 secs. Chris Hellsten (USA) in the ex Cremona Mostes boat was ninth ahead of Anja Friedrich (Germany) and Marian Jung (SVK).
175 had thirteen entries with World OSY 400 champion, Diego Bacchiega (Italy) taking pole with the VRP powered Baba boat 46.64 seconds . Buddy Tennell (USA) the defending World 0-175 champion was second 47.06 secs ahead of Billy Allen and Giuseppe Rossi.
In the capsule 1100 hydro class Tiziano Trombetta (Italy) took part in the training session then found the transom of his boat was damaged and withdrew the VRP from the competition. Yvonne Konig (Germany) looked to be without a drive after a hiccup with the promised hull, but the Thirlby family stepped in and loaned her the Konig powered boat of Ed Thirlby. She soon took to the new venture and circulated very rapidly, although she said she got battered about more than in her usual catamaran. Doug Hall from Kansas USA had a straight through exhaust Rossi that really made your ears ring. And others ran with open pipes which sounded fantastic. The APBA classes run to different rules !!!
The World APBA 500 Runabout class had 9 runners all Americans with Konig and Konny motors and just one VRP. The K-PRO junior hydro class (an equivalent to our J-250 set up) attracted nine young competitors .
Francesco Marsala took the first heat of 0-125 from Giuseppe Rossi with Viktor Vo (Hungary) and Diego Bacchiega with the VRPs third and fourth. Billy Allen the pole sitter never recovered from a poor start finishing a lowly 11th. Best American was Bill Tetro in fifth spot ahead of Ivan Copelli with the Falc motor.
It was a repeat result in heat two again by a 2 second margin between first and second, with Vo again third.Bob Wartinger the World record holder for the class was again last , still setting up his new Trombetta boat. In the third heat Marsala faltered on the penultimate lap but picked the motor up again to come home third behind Rossi who took the win from Vo. Although Rossi could still equal the points score with Marsala, he was content with a Rossi motor winning the championship in the hands of Marsala, thus all three sat out the final race, which was a victory for Diego Bacchiega from Billy Allen and Attila Hencz.

    Part 2

In 0-250 the pole sitter Rene Behncke was beaten by six seconds to the line by Alessandro Cremona with Olle Dickfors coming home third ahead of Marian Jung, Anja Friedrich and Paul Jillings. Chris Hellsten was the only other driver not to be lapped in the eight lap race with fourteen finishers. Salvatore Chiuri was chasing Cremona in second position when he retired to the pits on the last lap, thinking the white flag the Americans use as a last lap indicator was the chequered flag. This practice was stopped for all the other UIM races, but Chiuri lost the 300 points.
Europeans again dominated heat two when Cremona again won convincingly from Behncke with Chiuri third ahead of Dickfors, Jung and Friedrich.
Early on Sunday there was quite a stiff breeze blowing across the lake, causing the organisers to change the course and reduce the number of laps raced. The championship was sealed by Cremona in the third heat, Chiuri coming home second ahead of Dickfors. Behncke struck problems then powered on to fourth place ahead of three another VRP powered boats of Friedrich, Jung and Rytkonen.
Cremona had now added the World 250 crown to his World 350 and Formula 350 titles so sealing another title for Italy. With a maximum score the boat was placed in parc ferme and Chiuri stormed to a win in the final heat from Friedrich and Hellsten. Dickfors suffered from a lack of fuel pressure at the start so his medal challenge was over. Behncke also struck problems so Chiuri collected the silver medal with Behncke the bronze.

The 175 championship was held entirely on Sunday on the shortened course. It was to become a major VRP - GRM battle. With new 2 cylinder motors Marian Jung was extremely quick in heat one 3.58.84 winning by 10 seconds from Giuseppe Rossi, with the 125 Falc motor of Ivan Copelli third, then William Tetro, Billy Allen and Buddy Tennell but some way behind the two leaders.
Rossi won heat two in an even faster time 3.54.06 from Jung who had to power through the pack after a poor start. Bacchiega this time was third ahead of Vo with a one of the 350 engine barrels fitted to his motor. Tennell was fifth so the retention of the championship he has won the previous two seasons looked unlikely. Marian Jung held off Rossi in heat three to take the upper hand in the points score so it all depended on race four and a possible race time settlement. Marian Jung got the jump at the start but Rossi chased relentlessly and put pressure on the Slovakian. Lap after lap the challenge went on, but the on final lap Rossi was alongside into the last buoy. Then drama Jung on the inside collected the buoy on his pickle and dragged it to the line. Rossi went on to collect the 400 points a race time of 3.52.32 seconds and the World championship - the third for Italy at this race meeting. A disappointed Jung therefore took the silver medal, with bronze going to Bacchiega.

The spectacular 1100 hydro class came to a great finale with a hard fought final race. Doug Hall with his GRM powered craft had won heat 1 from Brandon Thirlby (Konny) and Yvonne Konig (Konig) , with David Hooten fourth. Heat two had to be rerun after Hall overturned in a slide at a buoy turn. Thirlby took the win from Konig with Pat Wright third ahead of Kenneth Nicholson. In the shortened races on Sunday Thirlby took the win in heat three from Hall with James (Ike) Yoder third then Konig.
Sean McKean after problems all weekend really motored well in the final race, albeit from a late start, but it was an incredible spectacle. Doug Hall and Thirlby battled all the race with drivers behind changing positions lap after lap. Hall took the heat win but his winning percentage over Thirlby (1.52%) was not as great as the 1.31% advantage by Thirlby in race three which settles equal scores should the course be changed. Brandon Thirlby therefore took the World title from Hall with German, Yvonne Konig collecting the bronze in her first drive in this hydro class.

The World 500 Runabout title was also decided over the weekend , with all the contestants being American. Local driver R.C.Hawie took a swim in heat one, and with a damaged boat was out for the remainder of the competition. Tim Small took the win of the restart from Brian Payn and Pete Voss. Mike Thirlby, who failed to finish heat one stormed to the win with his Konny in heat two ahead of Small and Voss. Small took the championship in heat three with another 400 points from Voss and Payn. Thirlby finished fourth ahead of Tim Chance. With a win in heat four Thirlby took the silver medal with veteran Voss claiming the bronze.
