  • Briggs discontinues outboard production

I just spoke with my Briggs & Stratton distributer, the outboard is no longer being produced. The announcement came this spring. If you want one grab one while you still can.

I've only seen one once, never worked on them, this is not going to effect me at all.

That's too bad. The Briggs motor is really quite a nice trainer for kids who may not quite be ready for a J. My 10-year old went out for his first ride in an older J hydro with a Briggs during a test day and it was perfect for him. The motor ran great, he had fun, and that's what it's all about. The Briggs goes fast enough so first-time or lesser-experienced kids aren't overwhelmed or afraid of the speed of a J, but goes slow enough to make them want to step up and go faster. My son's first question through his ear-to-ear grin was, "Can I take out a J?" when he got back in to shore. Hopefully enough Briggs motors are out there that other kids (potential racers, mind you) can get some experience and have a ton of fun doing it.
