  • Devil's Lake Kilos

A GREAT weekend on the Oregon Coast at Lincoln City, OR. High pressure, cool air and blue skies made for some incredible air density pressures, well below sea level.

New Kilo straightaway Records set pending final inspections and commission approval included:

    JR: Jared Martin, 36.337 mph
JH: Ashley Rucker, 41.855 mph (both J records set with Mercs)
AXSR: Kelly Hannon, 49.594 (with an OMC) mph
OSY 400, UIM Specs: Bob Wartinger, 70.166 mph
125CCR: David Tenney, 71.377; he improved this to 76.076 mph on Sunday
1 Liter: Dan Kanfoush, 111.634 mph
5 Liter: John Zimmerman, 124.551 mph
Super Stock: Tony Scarlatta: 122.241, improved this to 122.539 mph on Sunday
Grand Prix: Greg Hopp, 155.182 mph
Special Event, "G" class: Jerry Hopp, 146.292 mph
Special Event, "UL" class: Greg Hopp, 149.396 mph
Special Event, 48 volt Electric: Fred Saxby, 29.687, improved this to 30.136 mph on Sunday
Special Event, 144 volt electric UIM, Michael Bontoft: 92.067, improved this to 98.806 mph on Sunday
Special Event, 144 volt electric APBA, Michael Bontoft: 98.253 mph

Watching the 144 volt electric was worth the gas money for the trip: the hull is a Ron Jones Jr composite, similar to Troy Holmberg's D hydro. It was powered by an electric motor with a Bass lower Unit and FORTY-TWO small, RC-size Lithium Polymer (Li-Po) batteries. The boat was an absolute rocket and literally whistled thru the trap, accelerating all the way thru the traps like nothing I've ever seen.

Several of these records were significant increases. The 144v electric UIM record was an increase of 48 mph over the existing record. Truly impressive. Kanfoush's run was also impressive, given that I'd seen the existing record set (which was a 6 mph jump) a few years ago.

David Tenney bumped the 125ccr record by over 11 mph. Kanfoush and Rucker were 3 mph plus over their records. Wartinger's OSY mark was well over the 46 mph mark set in Sweden last year in less than ideal conditions (note - as a UIM record, this record was set under UIM criteria, not how we run OSY in the states, so it was a bone stock Yamato and with a minimum weight).

It was really cool seeing records set in a speed range from 30 mph to 155 mph.

          Congrats record setters

A big thumbs up to the region 10 kids, Jared, Ashley and Kelly. Grats too to the Paramore's, they have always been big supporters of the kilos. I know that even when they didn't run anything they paid for an entry to help with the costs. I'm positive Willy would have loved both electric records, totally cool.

                Correctomundo.

Yes it was, but it was a SS, not a PS.

I'm sure glad those 122 mph Super Stock Flat Bottoms are using Safety Capsules !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

                  NOT.

What's up with the Inboard Safety Commision ?

I was waiting for someone to say something like that! Tony has a new K boat he had the capsule removed from as well....

Seems they should be something to drive under a bubble, but, since I don't drive them, who am i to say, right?

Just for fun, David Tenney's sister wishes for all to see some of the elements of his success this last weekend. Coupled with intense hospitality from all the locals, and pit support from everyone around us, the pic shows an 11:16 gearcase, a DeWald 'XXX' prop, and 'Peter', the world traveled and world famous teddy, sent by his niece as a talisman for the record attempt.

Dean, what is the rule for open SS's? Im not being sarcastic, Im truly asking. If there is a rule for an open SS to be limited in performance due to safety reasons then I would like to know them. I was on pins and needles during these runs and would much rather have been under a lid. We are putting the capsule 68 back together to go for the kilos at Salton Sea in December. Again, Im to trying to be disrespectful, Im trying to learn if what we did in Lincoln City was innapropriate or illegal.

Skoontz, the capsule K5 that I pulled the capsule out of is being turned into a river play boat and will see some time at the track. I plan on driving a capsule K from now on and a capsule SS. The plan for the open K is to have a boat at the races to make a class if need be or if somebody wants to try stepping into the K class they have a boat to try without dropping a bunch of $$$$ in the process.
