  • Winter motor storage?

It is that time of the year and we must store our motors for the first time after a season of racing. We change the lower gear grease like we do after every race, drained all of the fuel, did a compression check (both motors 130), and shot some motor oil down the cylinders and turned over the motors.

Do you all recommend anything else or do we have it all covered?

I think you have covered it pretty well. The critical thing in your area is to make sure no water is in the block and/or lower unit. Changing the lower unit grease is a good thing but I would recommend that you store it in an area that does not freeze. I put a small rubber ball in the carb. throat to minimize air circulation into intake. Found the best ball to be one made for therapy. Sports equip stores have them. They are fairly soft rubber. Plug It Up

Plug the carb and the exhaust from getting any dust or mice into them.

Eaisest way to make sure your gearbox does not freeze is to remove it and store it inside your house, basement or something. I know with some of those Jap engines the gearbox is not sealed and the gear lube can run right out, I htink this is the one you have, meaning to fill it you remove it and pur more oil in. Not sure how you are gonna handle that one. You could always put it on the fireplace mantel and smell gear lube all winter as a reminder of whats to come.

        Basement

I carry ours down the basement steps so they are warm and toasty all winter. I give them all a kiss and thank them for a wonderful summer and cover them with a blankie.

Here in region 5 we take them out of the trailer once or twice a month and go to the lake. We usually meet some friends at the lake and spend some quality time with our engines.

          Sorry, couldn't resist.

            Fogging Oil

            Google.... Outboard Motor Winterizing

            Use this:

Step 3: Treat your outboard with “storage oil” (also called “fogging oil”).

Fogging oil can be purchased at a Marine Store.

            Drain the carburator.

Wash out the foot with WD-40 or kerosine, to make sure all of the water is gone.... then fill with with gear oil.

You know if we had a basement I would allow engines there, there was many a time I had horse equipment in the basement and turn about is fair play. We don't have a basement anymore, but I bet we would squeeze (one more thing) into the laundry room if they had a stand. I would move some "junk" to make it happen.

I liked the mantle idea but we don't have one of those and on top of the wood stove probably isnt the safest or best idea

To those of you down south where the ponds don't freeze and you have no idea of what snow is, think of us when you fire up those engines as we skate across the frozen lakes and rivers (yes they freeze too) that we raced on this summer!

Welcome to hydroracer, we hope you enjoy your visit.

Mike......you have a jewell there. My first year racing my wife gave me the slightest bit of encouragement. She says "Sean, I think you need a bigger motor". So, thats what I did. That worked great until the next year at Lake Lawrence where I experienced my first blowover. She hasn't come to watch a race since :eek :

Sean, you are right. She is special in a lot of ways. She just stood on the dock waiting for the rescue boat when I decided to go swimming this year shaking her head and smiling. We do this as a family and went to 4 more races since then and we are already making plans for next year.

I would like to say "Thanks" to all the folks that helped us get started in this sport and also the great driving tips. If it was not for the support at "Hydro Racer" we could of never done this. Also all of the folks at SLORA who we now consider part of our extended family, it was a great season. Also thanks to all of the crew that helped from SOA at the Moses Lake race and Nationals. I would love to mention names but I know I would leave someone out. We had a blast with everone and now it is going to be a long 8 months.

Now Jeff, That IS kinda sick!

Jeff, I love that picture, you are awesome. It was many years since your family, ( I can't remember if you were there or not, forgive me)and I sat on the shores of Burt Lake during Top'O' discussing our love for all things stock outboard. I can remember your Dad being impressed with my 'RC' boats and Craig B. saying "they are some of the good ones" as only he can.
I got into racing this year, finally, after a lot of years of watching and supporting, and I have enjoyed, sometimes through your eyes, many images and stories from races that I have yet to attend. I did not get to talk to you at Grass Lake. I will make some of next years races and hope to re-introduce myself.
Until then, let's keep the sunny side up and full throttle! KampKurz

Okay, up here in region 6, that's a little hard to take. Our water will be very hard (solid) and the temps will not be screaming "Let's go testing" Good for you! Maybe I'll just build something to mix it up with the flat turners for next years races. Bless us all! KampKurz
