So it was was Saturday morning first heat in CSH. I had a slow start because I had to slow down to avoid jumping the gun. Was passed by three, maybe 4, other guys but was closing the gap the whole race. I was coming to pin 2 in the first corner last lap right behind the pack. I was probably pushin it a bit hard and hooked it pretty good, tossing me outa the boat, But the boat didn't go over. I was towed back in and made sure everything was OK for the next heat. Billy Allen comes over and says "Now, you wont be doing that again, right?". I didn't even think to knock on wood. Well again I had a slow start btu still legal and had to spend the heat catching up and again, I was right there behind the pack this time right between pins 3-4 in turn two. I was probably pushing it a bit too hard. I hit a wake and heard the engine wined up a bit the boat hooked sideways and flipped. At first I wasn't sure if it had gone over or just spit me out. When I got my bearings and signaled I was OK, I turned around to find my boat floating upside down next to me and realized the work to come assuming everything was OK. Surprisingly I did NOT blow the head gasket, but we replaced it anyway. Also the combing was fine aswell with no cracks what so ever.
When we got it back to shore we flipped it over and put it on the cart. I'm not even sure how many people came over to help with drying it out. I made a run to the hardware store and grabbed a gallon of denatured alcohol. Our mag had no holes in it and being a 102 we had to screw up the timing to get the water outa the mag. We got the motor dry and had some people with the correct tools set the timing. I then went out in 20ssh WITHOUT a restrictor plate to work the motor in and let everyone get a good start ahead of me as I was going to hang back due to not having a restrictor plate. Well as I should have noticed when it had trouble planning off (I assumed because it was still wet or what not) it was running a good 15mph+ loss of speed. We then spent the whole weekend trying to find out what was wrong with the motor, making a lap during patrol boat changes with the same thing every time, not much power and no top end.
Well tonight we completely disassembled the carb and found nothing then went to check the timing. Turns out the timing was retarded (delayed) by over 20 thousandths of an inch, firing at almost TDC. An easy mistake that should have been double checked but with the rush of everything, Oh well.
I would like to thank everyone who took their time to help us out! Everything should be in tip top shape and we will be running at Kingston, NH.
