  • Disqualification, legal helmet colors

So, along the DQ lines, which of these colors would you consider legal, or not. The paint manufacturers color labels are under the scan, and, how is the color legality determined? Like is there a color chart the judges have, or, can they call you after you have painted the helmet if they decide the color is inappropriate??

Thats what I'm saying guys...Everyone has a different vision as to what colors are in fact the colors of the rulebook. Now, for being unsure and my obligation to ask, is it not best to get an answer BEFORE one would paint the helmet?

I would love to hear from anyone on safety committee on this particular issue.

        Brian:

Far as stepping up to OPC...I have a little girl just itching to do so. If she could get an offer in an unlimited, she would do it... But, college in 3 years, one other in college now, OPC and it's cost ain't gunna happen on my dime anytime soon!

Why do have to paint it? just leave it alone and have fun.

You can take this how ever you want but if it were my kid and yes I do have a little girl I would over rule and leave it orange or yellow. God forbid she ever get in a situation that her helmet might save her life but lets be real for a minute her helmet is a safety device not a fashion statement keep it clear of markings and bright in color so if she ever goes in the water and needs to be seen by on coming traffic it will do its job!

                Dan:

So, what you're saying is if there is an incident, standardized colors are what the safety/rescue will be looking for.
What I'm saying, asking, is, who calls the name of the paint color? The names I provided are what the rule book says the helmet must be....

From a safety standpoint, that neon rosea/safety red are just as bright, if not more bright and recognizable as yellow/orange. I'm not tying to start an argument here, just looking for clarification from the rule to what the paint manufacturers label the colors to be.

keep the helmet international orange or yellow. Painting it the same color of the boat would not be very smart. How hard would it be for rescue to determine where the driver is at, if the helmet is the exact same color as the boat. Give up the fashion statment and rule for SAFETY! Keep all the cool graphics off the helmet also. Paint the boat as you see fit, but leave the safety gear alone and universal like pretty much everyone else is doing! This is racing, not a fashion show!

PS; the people you DO NOT want to piss off or anger are the scorers and referees! They do make the final decisions!

Exactly, Daren. The difficulty here, is as asked....What do the Scorers/referees call Safety red? Since we know what the paint manufacturers call safety red, neon red, etc, what do they call that color?

This is along the lines of my obligation to ask what is legal first, before the race, rather than running the race and getting DQed when it does not need be....

when in doubt, ask the referee or scorer........easy enough! I HIGHLY doubt if your helmet is painted (in its entirety!) flourescent red, yellow or orange or international orange.........the only allowable colors, that you will be DQ'd, UNLESS you also have some other distracting colors or graphics! While the added graphics people add to the lower parts of their helmets look really cool, maybe the helmet should not be allowed to be personalized, but only one solid color! That would eliminate alot of doubt and also people that buy a motorcyle helmet off the shelf and use it for boat racing.

The required colors are also for the drivers that are approaching a wrecked participant. They need to know what to be sure to miss. Color the same as the boat could lead to dodging something and hitting the wrong object. Get It?
