  • Return of Stover Hire

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

    June 18, 2008; Syracuse, Indiana.

Seventy-one-year-old Stover Hire of Syracuse, Indiana, has announced that he will make a return to APBA Stock Outboard Racing in 2008. Hire, a former Stock Outboarder who was extremely successful in the two-cylinder runabout classes in the 1960's and 1970's, moved to the Inboard Category in the 1980's. Hire last returned to a Stock Outboard to participate in the B Stock Runabout Class at the 1985 Stock Outboard Nationals held in Dayton, Ohio. Hire has announced that he will make his latest return to outboard competition again in Dayton, Ohio at this year's Great American Outboard Race to be held August 23-24. Hire will pilot a Racecraft runabout and will participate in the B Runabout class with a Hot Rod.

Hire's return has been most especially provoked by Mr. John Rinker, formerly of Rinker Boat Co. of Syracuse. Rinker has been visiting outboard races in Region 6 and 7 this spring and attempting to coordinate the return of runabout racers from the 60's and 70's for a "Last Blast".

Rinker and Hire tested an A Stock Runabout on Syracuse Lake just a few weeks ago with some assistance from Team Racecraft. After testing the A Runabout, Hire inquired into obtaining a B with which to enter a race and remarked "I wanna go faster." Team Racecraft member and race boat builder, Paul Trolian, observed Hire test the A Runabout and commented "I think he's still got it."

Even if Stover lost 50%, he would still be the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Will somebody please lend him his 56-H Hedlund Runabout back?

I remember him at the 72 Nationals in Cedar Rapids. He was awsome!

Anybody know where Earl Garrison is?

I thought Rinker was joking about the "Last Blast" race. It would be a blast! Go Stover and Rinker! I would love to see them on the race course and teach the young guys how to race. Eddie watch out!

Another news flash, Stormin Norman Schaub is returning to CSR. He borowed his last Stippich back from Chuck Peterson and he's going to kick all of our butts with his super fast 30H.

That would be cool wouldn't it! I still have Dave Schmitzer's 35ssr Stippich
and its' ready to go thanks to Jon Walters. We could have a little roll up flashback.

I wonder if I could talk Davey out of his rig to go for a ride?
I might need to use Mikey Ross's life jack.
Hey Ponch how lite can you build one of those race crafts? Maybe we can put helium in it somehow to help me?
Oh boy and to think I was just going to go to help Dipstick out this year in the 45. Maybe I should sell the sailboat after all?

                      How Successful Was He?

                      For you new-comers: Stover won the B Stock Runabout National Title in 1963, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1971 and 1972.

                      (Thanks, Dana!).

                            Stover,

Do you remember my Uncle, Jim Brewster, who raced against you years ago in BSR? He told us many Stover Hire stories. He, along with my Father Jack raced for many years together. My Dad is still coming to races and refereeing some. I'm sure he'd like to talk about those days with you again someday.

I raced against Stover Hire in "BU" for several years in the mid-60's. I never saw him lose. I remember when he switched from a Rinker to the Hedlund. His driving style was no different than Ed Hearn or Paul Trolian, now. He had the same kind of success for the reasons they are successful....good preparation, great starts and aggressive driving. By the way, I rebuilt my '65 Rinker this past winter with integral marathon tanks in the chines for one last attempt to finish the Top'O Mich this summer. If I don't break my body, I'll bring it to Dayton and race it there, too.
Stover.....You're right, you don't forget how to drive but let me tell you that loss of upper body strength and bad knees will limit your mobility in the boat and make Monday mornings a painful time. It is just as fun, though. Welcome back. Mike Marshall, Raceboat 61-S
