  • This weekend will never be forgotten. WIN?? Banks lake WA.

I am glad the site is back. This is a play by play of the weekend I will never forget. We made our five hour journey from western Montana to central Washington to a place called Banks Lake for the second race of the season.
If you know anything about the Columbia river basin the wind howls most of the time. Fridays testing was no exception. We had white caps at times but were allowed to go out. I took out my brand new boat just to check the feel of the steering and was suprised at how well the boat handled. I felt good about the boat. We planned to run 20 SSH and CSH. Team SS ( the Stone family) offered to help us pit so that my son in law and I could race in the same classes against each other. Motivation factor.

Saturday the water was like a mill pond all day. 8 boats were in the 20 SSH class and we did three section both Saturday and Sunday. This would give us lots of driving time. The first couple of heats I used to time my starts since I was given permission to move up for my second race on Friday night. I believe I finished 3rd and 4th. The boat handle great and I praticed my turns the way everyone on the other web site said. I found what worked for me and my boat. The last heat I finished second and found out what a great start and side by side racing for thee laps is all about. Dave M was right, there is nothing, and I mean nothing like it.

Sunday the water was still like a mill pond. This just never happens in this area. I was really feeling good about me and my boat. For a new person like myself, I really felt good about a perfect flying start on the ouside. I use that all day just to stay out of trouble. It is really fun to go into the first turn in the lead even if you are in lane 5 or 6. Then as I cleared boats I would continue moving in a lane. All three heats on Sunday came down to three boats, mine, the son in law and a hard racing Jill Walling ( 2007 high point) Each heat it was side by side for all 3 laps. It was exciting being in it but I also wish I could of seen it as a spectator too. The last corner we would look at each other and then get as low and back as far as we could and let her fly. I won twice and she won once. She said afterwards that it was some of the best racing she has been involved in. It was fun on the cool down lap to wave and acknoledge the fun you just had with the other drivers.

I had no idea that they throw you in for your first heat win so I got a bath. But at the awards ceremony I definately was not expecting a second bath. I was having so much fun racing and did not care about points but I ended up with more than everyone else for the two days. I do have one complaint, my right hip and left knee are killing me this morning.

If the Stones are out there I would like to thank them and all the folks on this site for the help and the folks at the race. This was a dream come true. When I started I did not care if I ever won and if it never happens again so be it. This is to much fun and the folks are great. The Stones have some great pictures of the race and hopefully they will post them. I hope they got some of my new boat since I don't have any.

      padding . . .

running CSH and 200ssH one can never have enough padding! Forget cushy foam, you'll need hi-density stuff. The kind of foam used under Astroturf is the best.

      Congrats on your first win!

I am going to add some more foam. You must be pushing with the hip against the cockpit side? In the heat of battle I don't know what I was hitting with my hip or if it was just the way I had it turned. My wife thinks I need a CSH or DSH with a laydown cockpit. She said like the rest of the geriatric folks that race. LOL

I have also decided to just race one class. Right now I am only going to race the 20SSH. Maybe after some testing I will go back to CSH but we seem to have no power for that class. I think we need to try some other props but that is expensive.

          Thanks

Glad you guys made the trip and had a great time to make it all worth while. As much as you thank us for the help, we must return the favor. It's a chore for our SE's as you saw, and YOUR help was greatly appreciated. We had a rough weekend down in the "grato", but it was fun time with all of you and I'm trying to go through photos as we speak... I should even have some video at some point as well. It was a blast watching you guys steadily improve and for "rookies" you (and Kevin) were sure getting the hang of the starts... and all the restarts just gave you more times to practice!!! lol

Sorry I missed the second dunking at the ceremony (I thought we had you covered with the first one)

Let us know when you think your headed back over this way for another go, and we'll see you there.

btw, I'll send you a PM so I can get you some of those Hi-Res shots as well.

hip bangs the starboard cockpit wall . . .

probably several times a turn. Result: sore hip AKA hip pointer. Beating the driver up is the nature of Yamato engines in stock classes. Cure: LOTS of sturdy padding! Yamatos are smoother when running mods because the "club foot" has been altered to look like an actual racing foot.

                Congrats blueskyracer

That is so cool you already won your first race! Stateline Outboard Racing Association is the most fun you can have in this sport. The Stones are my competition and are the best people to race with and against. They are always there for you when you need a little help. Congrats again BSR. Hope to meet you soon. 99R Blewbyeu

Hey there Blueskyracer (are you dry yet!!)

The Banks Lake Race is in the books and it was a huge success and just a whole lot of fun. I would like to thank all the support personel that helped out with the daily running of the events. A big thank you to Ron Baker who did a outstanding job keeping the ball rolling in a timely fashion and still made time to have fun. We had all the classes from stocks to pro's and the classes of
V8 inboard flat bottoms. I understand that there might be a picture or two of a mishap show up on a website soon of a certain member over a body of water without a boat under him or her Lets go with him I would like to also thank the inboard camp for attending and just being a great group of guys and gals to hang out with. Again thank you and I hope to see you all at Newport over the 4th of July for our AOF Divisionals. (Blueskyracer should be dry by then)

I may be dry by then but not out of the clouds. It was a great weekend of racing. Everyone was having a great time and no one gets upset about anything. It was great plus it was nice to see the sun. In the northwest this year we have been awful soggy so it was nice to see warm water (62 degrees) and blue skys.

We did have a couple of outboard drivers leave there boats but nothing major. Not wanting to be out done the inboard guys had to also leave there boats a couple of times. Having been in the water two times Sunday it felt good because it was getting a little bit warm.

Terry and Ron did a great job of keeping the race moving along. Hopefully the weather will hold for the Fourth of July race.

                      Congratulations!!

Congratulations on your first win! It took me 4 years to get mine.
It was 32 years ago but I still remember it like it was yesterday. I won some national championships after that but that first win is special in its own way.
From this point forward, the blue sky is the limit for you!
Good luck and safe racing to you and your family.

Yes Terry... there are pictures coming!! I have a ton to go through between the three cameras in action from our camp (dad shot over 1100 on saturday alone ). I will get them as soon as I can and I even have video of this same "flying man" incident.

Thanks for the kind words Bluebyeu... we miss you and hope things are well.

                          Congrats

I can't add much to what Hobart and Kargas said, but your descriptives sure brought old memories back to life. Out of curiosity, Bluesky, were you also a skydiver in a former life?!? ENJOY, though hard to outdo a week-end like that; it just keeps gettin better. Only thrill I can recall, that's any better is stealing the start at a Nationals. from the ASH driver formerly known as 60-0

                            Hey 60-O

Is it not great to recall memories? Too bad you missed the reunion in DePue last year. Very nice to see you on here! It would be great to hear from you...if you remember me??
