  • Lead weight

    Hey Everybody!!!
I was wondering where you get your lead weight, whether it be shot or plates. I need like 35 lbs of the stuff!! I've tried calling around but can't find any.
    Thanks in advance.

Dive shops have lead weights in stock for divers, but that is going to be the most expensive way to buy it. If u have a really old plumbing shop, or roofers, they may have some sheet stock . Cheapest ballast is steel plate. A flat piece of 1" thick, 12" x 12" will weigh about 40lbs.

      Lead

      Karl,

      Google search "sheet lead".

Sheet lead is used in roofing for flashing and also in plumbing. Try a roofing supply or a plumbing supply. Also, shot, re-loading for shotgun shells... gun store.

      Good Luck.

        Karl,

Go to McMaster-Carr website: http://www.mcmaster.com/ and type in the word "lead" under their search option and all types of it will show up. None of it's cheap. You can also try a good gun shop (I'm sure they will have some heavy metal shot for re-filling shells.

If you need that much, I'd buy some lead shot and bike intertubes and fill them. IF you go this route, make sure you zip-tie and duct tape the ends very well (you don't want a bunch of shot in you boat).

You can always come to the race and I'm sure you can borrow some if you aren't able get any before then.

          Lead

I just picked up about 65 lbs a couple of weeks ago at the recycling center. They had all shapes and sizes. I bought it in sheets that were about 16" wide that fit nicely in the cockpit. Even used it cost me about a buck a pound though. Good luck..

65lbs??? John, you need to start eating TRIPLE cheeseburgers!! All kidding aside though.....when I "used" to have to add lead to my boats (before I gained the extra 25lbs), I bought lead at my local metal supply house..........they have it in big rolls, so you could cut off as much as you needed............as sure though with the added cost of metal nowadays, it is gonna cost alot more.

ALWAYS be sure the lead (or whatever you add to make weight) is SECURELY fastened down!!!!!!!!!! And, if you have to add anywhere close to 100lbs of lead, you are racing in the wrong class.........

              try talking to my dad...

My dad gets his place of employment to donate lead to my cause-they just don't know it. We get it in flexable slabs that we just fasten to the floor of the boat. Maybe you could talk to him about getting you some. Just PM Steve Warnock.

I always go to the local tire shop and get lead by the bucket full. It's all the weights they take off wheels when they balance tires. Take it home and use a 8X10 cake pan and your outdoor fish fry cooker and melt it down into whatever thickness you need. The lead melts real easy and makes good flat plates.

****.. It was just an idea that we use with the tunnel boat. Spend all the money you want! Next time I need some weight I'll be sure and spend a weeks pay,, You act as if lead is some off the wall idea or something. Maybe I should just carry an extra person along with me?

A know toxin if you have constant skin contact for several years or like eating old paint, its not like they are Roman and using ground lead as a table condiment (And yes the romans did do that).

Yes. Tire shops are a good source. Make a friend with a tire shop guy and you will have a good supply.

                            Tire Shop

I work at Wal-Mart Tire and Lube Express, so I already am a good friend of the manager lol. They wont let me take the used weights because the used battery guy picks them up. So that option wont work. I called Home Cheepo and they dont have the right stuff. I've called alot of the Salvage Yards and Recycling Centers around here and nobody will sell the stuff. If I can't find any soon, I'll have to barrow some @ Constantine. Thanks for the ideas guys.

                              Ebay

Try Ebay. I purchased 25lbs of ingots that averaged 1.5lbs apiece, that I will melt into shape, for $27.00 plus $10.00 shipping. That was at the "buy it now price". I didn't want to waste my time bidding. Use the search words "lead weight". Hope this helps.
