  • Mercury Racing announces 60hp 4-stroke racing motor!

Now THIS is a step in the right direction! Just saw this today on the dealer website:

    New Mercury 60 EFI FormulaRace
Latest FourStroke Outboard From Mercury Racing

FOND DU LAC, Wis., April 22, 2008 – Mercury Racing is pleased to announce the introduction of the all-new Mercury 60 EFI FormulaRace outboard. The 60 h.p. in-line four-cylinder engine expands Racing’s breadth of low-emissions 4-strokes; an offspring of the soon-to-be released Verado 350 SCi. The two join Mercury Racing’s line of OptiMax “XS” series of low-emissions 2-stroke consumer outboards.

The engine, built at Mercury Marine’s state-of-the-art outboard manufacturing facility in Suzhou, China, was designed specifically to meet increasing demand for engines in support of the popular Mercury FormulaFour outboard tunnel boat racing series. The series, featuring one-design 14-foot tunnel race boats powered by a production Mercury 60 EFI FourStroke outboard, was originated by Brunswick Marine Sweden and their dealer Mikael Frodé. A total of 10 boats compete on the Scandinavian circuit ( Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Norway) with an additional six boats scheduled to join the fleet in 2008.

Although racing is basically exempt from emissions regulations, event promoters are beginning to realize that they need to create new classes and/or update existing boats with emissions compliant power. The 60 EFI FormulaRace provides racers and promoters with an affordable modern engine which is also environmentally responsible. Racing communities throughout Germany, Poland, China and the Middle East have expressed interest in the Mercury FormulaFour series.

    Back to the Future

The 60 EFI FormulaRace features a production 60 horsepower four-cylinder powerhead mounted on a short (15” - 381 mm) shaft, die-cast mid section with race-inspired solid upper and lower mounts. Power is transferred to the water through the production 1.83:1 gearcase. A line of Mercury Racing Lab Finished ® stainless steel propellers are available. An accessories kit sold with the engine includes competition steering bars.

The 15” mid section, five inches shorter than a normal (20”- 508 mm) model, lowers the engine’s center of gravity. The lower center of gravity, combined with solid engine mounts, enhances boat handling and overall performance.

North American tunnel boat racing is stagnant in regards to new entries into the sport. Entry level classes currently feature older race engines which have been out of production for years. Turn-key, entry-level equipment is non-existent.

The U.S. based F-1 ChampBoat Series is planning to bring the Mercury FormulaFour series concept to the states in 2009. ChampBoat promoter Mike Schriefer envisions the Mercury 60 EFI FormulaRace outboard and the FormulaFour class concept as the breath of life that U.S. outboard tunnel boat racing is in dire need of. Schriefer plans to launch a powerboat racing school featuring 12 identical turn-key spec boats. The school will be used to promote safety first with new state-of-the-art race boats and power. The school will enable “graduates” to rent or buy the boats for competition in the new ChampBoat Series F-4 class.

No Sam: That is the old 60EFI/Formula 4: This new motor will look different.

That picture is of the standard 4-stroke EFI Mercury 60hp up thru 2006 model year.

This new motor will have the late 2007 & later hood design and be 100% Mercury engineering (Wisconsin) & manufacturing (in China...).

They would be better investing money into showing that the current generation E-tec/Optimax running synthetic oils do not pollute as much as the four stroke and call it a day.

Sam read the press release the motor is for tunnel boat racing not Stocks or Mod. This is huge news for the tunnel boat world.

So, does Mercury build any motors in the US? Or are they all built overseas?

most all the 4 strokes (besides the Verados) are made overseas (in conjunction with Tohatsu/Nissan).

                          Explaination here

I typically have many encouraging things to say, when encouraging things are accomplished, and as attempts are made to move forward. So, may I ask, what is encouraging about a heavy 4 stroke engine? A few answers and perspectives below.....

On the positive, yes, first new product out in quite some time. Cudos for that. On the realistic, I would expect allot better from Mercury Marine, given their history. All in all, I'm having a very difficult time accepting the governments intervention through way of EPA with how the manufacturers are going, hence 4 strokes evolving from junk science..

And I have no intention of beginning an non productive bench racing type of argument, so please don't take it as such, that is not the intent here. This venue, is simply a non biased opinionated discussion, which is healthy, and I hope manufacturers someday take heed rather than be led by big brother.....After all, they everyone knows how well Big Brother manages anything they get their hands on, just look at social security....

                          Back to the point....

Mercury knows the performance minded boaters and racers are having a tough time accepting 4 strokes and you can simply see this by reading between the lines of the video for the 350 Verado.

The marketing department has all kinds of talk about how great they run, how quiet they are, how much power they have. BTW, this is a pretty cool engine, a freeken blown outboard! However a very far, far cry from an Optimax with similar power, less pollutants if you use fair methods to calculate end results.

So, as well as Merc has done with the Verado engine and all it's glory, why is there not one mention (unless they changed the film from the original) about the new 4 stroke technology?

The answer is very simple. The marketing department has the data from focus group studies that indicate many boaters, performance minded and otherwise are at best cool to 4 stroke technology. So, they did not wish to drop that on the potential buyer at the time it was produced..

Now, said all this please bear with me here. I'm at the stage that 4 strokes suck. I was a long way before that 3 years ago. What did it, was one 4 stroke at our marina in 1967, and it was a charming and delightful Homelite 55 on a home made cabin cruiser. It was piloted by an old guy with about 4 teeth in his mouth a stubble beard on his face with brown tobacco dripping from his jowls spiting out as he spoke. The thing sounded as thoug it was going to bust a crank every time he started it....Much like giving children the wrong impression and having them marred for life, I believe I was a victim here...

So, after they remove everything good from the 2 stroke line up, I'll have no choice but to accept a 4 stroke and choose to love them. Since I don't need to do that for quite some time, I see that tobacco drolling old man every time someone mentions 4 stroke.....God did I just say that?????

Sorry what I cast off sounded negative, it at this time, what I see, and what I see for the future with 4 strokes. I did not mean for anyone to cross negativity, with factual reality. There is a huge difference between the two..

I already knew that, evidenced by link to the boat pictures & OPC thread.

Big congrats and thanks to Frode for getting this ball rolling and hope that all the US seats are filled by owners or renters soon!
