I have a 28 h.p. yamaha outboard on my hydro and was wondering if it is possible to install a race lower unit,

    At what cost?

Anything is possible, but is it worth the money?

Some will disagree if its worth it, or go as far as to say you shouldnt, thats up to you. Do you feel safe getting up to 10 more mph? Are you willing to make or have mods made?
I put a Yamato 102 foot [w/o altering the foot] on an OMC mid, it has a waterpump and will fit 25 & 35hp 31.8 powerheads. I run this for fun on a C hydro. With a modified fishing lower it was reaching the 50 mark with killer acceleration, now with ok acceleration itll reach 60+ on a 25 powerhead with minor top speed adjustments.
To me its worth it, I do 95 % of the work [welding & precision machine work Im not set up for] It might take time to find a foot, Id avoid the old AB quickies, expensive, hard to find parts for and might not be up to the Yamahas tork. I dont think theres a bolt up for that but look into gear set options and speed props that can be adapted. Most small race props are left rotation but some rights show up on Ebay.
A speed prop and some setup adjustments might make a big difference Jacking the motor up will allow for more RPMs but beware of the handling with the motor hi. My hydro can be turned at full throttle [after a quick backdown, turn and re-throttle] ok but not as well as a shorter & lighter motor would. More for straight line fun>>>>>>> Now that youve heard from the blind leading the blind wanna-B racer dept...

The OMC/MERC A-foot is also avail and very adaptable.......cost somewhere around $1000-$1100.........will need to make adapter plate between foot and tower.

Or if the Sidewinder/Hot-Rod foot is avail, you could adapt it with a 1/4" plate....will have to fabricate driveshaft with either.

Adapter plate/driveshaft will be custom and fabrication=$$$

        contact Race'n outboards/Ron seliwatch

Another way might be to adapt a nosecone to yer current foot.......look for prop19 or Ron Hill on E-bay.

That wasn't Neil's question ... is it cost effective to add a racing lower unit to a fishing motor that has no racing class vs just buying a whole used racing motor?

Sam, I know that was the point of the LOL at the end. It was an attempt at humor

Yes it is, It must be great to race, testing, milling the chute & 3 laps flat out! & the party [As a late starter in vintage kneelers its still on my someday list.
A fun boat on the other hand you can run as much as you want - when you want, dont have to use a pumpless or valuable race motor to be fast, all ya need is to find a used foot or 2. and/or props and adapt.
Theres alot of potential lost in the fishing lowers, desinged to move a big load at moderate speed. Ive taken an OMC screw together club foot, modified it, adapted a 2 blade speed prop to it and went from 36 to 45 on a runnabout then put it on a hydro and got 52. The foot is thinned, coned, locked in forward and has no teeth on reverse gear so no couter-rotating goin on. Its now on a pals hydro and last GPS test was still doin 52.
