  • Merc A/B gearfoot question

I'm rebuilding a lower unit for a 20H project and I'm about the replace the driveshaft bearing and the bearing in the nose cone.

I have some new ones left over from the last one we did, but I seem to recall them not fitting (hence the reason they're still around!)
Inside diameter is correct, but outside diameter is a hair too big. They're Torrington precision bearings, which I thought were the correct ones

Anyone know the correct bearings to use/a good supplier?

The dirve shaft is gb-912 and the prop shaft is gb-98 they used to be common but have since become hard to get and costly. You can use the b-912 and the b-98 but the outside dia is slightly bigger so the case has to be honed or reamed to fit. If your going to do that there are better bearings then those listed which has to be fitted to. INA SCE98 prop shaft and INA SCE912 drive shaft
or IKO BA98Z or OH prop shaft and IKO BA912Z or OH drive shaft.
Destiny is a matter of chance,it is a matter of choice; it is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved.

The "G" stands for "ground", indicating that the factory ground down the outside of the bearing a little and put a taper on it ... that is why the non G bearings are a little bigger. Other than that they are identical.

We used to simply ream the cone for better and more available bearings. The reamer was relatively inexpensive and we could use a bearing with caged needles rather than the full-compliment ones that Merc used. I want to say the bearing was a jb-98 but am not positive after all this time.

Thanks for the replies, I'll see what's available through my local bearing place and go from there!
