  • Akron, Ohio July 19-20

TRORA returns to Springfield Lake in Lakemore, OH (just south east of Akron, OH) for the first time since 1994. This was a priemere race site for TRORA throughout most of the 1980’s and early 1990’s. In its peak, this site was host to both a Merc. Challenge Series Race and a Records Run Race. This year’s race will be held July 19-20 with testing available, at your own risk, on Friday the 18th. We are listing all Stock and all Mod classes on the sanction as well as a Special Event which will be a 20SSH, 25SSH, and CSH Gran Prix. This event will consist of 3-5 laps raced on a tri-oval race course with a lemans start and it will be run at the end of the day Saturday. The prize for this event is still being determined. This race is in conjunction with the Lakemore & Springfield town days they are calling “Rock the Docks”, which will feature a car show, live bands, small carnival rides and food venders throughout the weekend. The two cities are really excited to have us back and are working hard at finding sponsorship to provide "show money" for each registered driver. Finally, the cities are working on a possible deal with SportsTime Ohio, a Northeast Ohio tv channel, to come and film the race, which would then be aired at a later date. A lot of work has gone into this race and a lot more work still has to be done but TRORA extends an open invitation to ALL in hopes to have a nice showing of boat to put on a GREAT race.

Thanks for the exciting news. Lakemore, Ohio is no longer on the AAA Ohio road map. Looks great. The Google map does the trick . Jack

I cannot wait to go back to race at our "home track". It's been a long time. We've had some great races at this place. We have a very good shot at expanding our public awareness at this race site. You would not believe how fired up the Mayor is for this race!

TRORA and boatracing in general would be most appreciative of your support.

A very big thank you to Rick Wagner, Jr. and Rick Wagner, Sr. for taking this on and getting us back on this beautiful lake!

Harder work than we would have ever imagined!!!!

Rick and I are learning first hand as to what has to be done before we put a boat on the water. We're used to being there for anything that needs to be done during the race event. This race site has the potential of growing to a bigger and better annual event. The fact that its only an hour from home for us is even better. I'm in agreement with some of the other club members to decline any tow money so that more money goes out to the drivers coming from a greater distance.
We're being asked for driver bios. I'm thinking it's for the programs and the TV coverage. We'll know more after our next meeting with the Lakemore/Springfield Lake committee. We'll keep everyone updated as we find out more information.

              Its Official

Its official! A contract has been signed for this race to be held July 19, 20 along with testing, at your own risk, on Friday the 18th. Previously, I stated that there would be over $4000 worth of tow money but that was not included in the contract as the two cities could not guarentee this but are working very hard at coming up with some kind of tow or show money Regardless, this is a great site and a must attend!

This link is to the Akron Beacon Journal, local newspaper, reporting on the upcoming race. http://www.ohio.com/news/top_stories/17839794.html

I think this is one of the key items to this race. We are always complaining that we need to advertise and get the word to the public. If this can get pulled off, here is some great PR for outboard racing. Sportstime OH is the station that broadcast all the Indians Baseball games. While not ESPN, it is a basic cable channel and covers from Erie, PA to almost Toledo, OH and down to Columbus. That is a nice chunk of ground that will get exposed to outboard racing.

Between TV coverage and maybe some show money, as well as a great lake to run on, this will be a top shelf race site that everyone should put on their race schedule.

That's a good one Matt! Sure is nice to not have to wait for the barge to pass through the race course between heats! (and take our bouy's with it)
                    Aahhh....the good old days!!!

                        Hotel Reservations

If anyone out there is planning on staying at a hotel for the Akron Race, I suggest you get your hotel reservation in early. I found out today while getting sanction information that the Soap Box Derby Championships begin the same weekend and hotels are filling up fast. Here is a list of chain hotels and numbers that are within 15 minutes of Lakemore. Comfort Inn (330-645-1100), Fairfield Inn (330-245-0041), Hampton Inn (330-644-6579), Quality Inn (330-644-7126), Red Roof Inn (330-644-7748) Best Western (330-794-1050) There are other hotels farther south and north on I 77.

Although the area isn't the greatest for camping, camping will be allowed in the pits.

Are any of the hotels helping by sponsoring the race? Any other reason to pick one over the other (like bar in the hotel, good restaurants closer, etc.)?
