  • B stock Konig

I see this motor on Ebay for sale. What is the history of this motor, etc in racing (not this one in particular)? What class was it for?

You should buy it! Then we can get the rules changed in DMH so you can race it! Sorry, but I couldn't help myself.

I'm interested in the history of a Konig stocker too.

Didn't know there was such a thing! I've seen several old Konigs but they were all alkys (NOA and APBA motors).

Would have been nice if the pictures in the auction were better (close ups)...
      ...

OMC FE/SE powerhead parts for sale. Kurcz ported block, Mod 50 pistons and cylinder head, exhaust, etc.

            B Stock

It was not "banned" by APBA, it was never approved (I don't think Dieter or Scott ever applied for it to be a legal APBA motor) ... but ... it was approved in Canada. They were raced in Canada for a little while, but that is about all I've ever been able to learn about them. They were also raced in Europe, but Stock racing never really took off there like alky and OPC did. Craig Bowman's dad never mentioned them racing in any of his magazine articles, so unless someone can find newspaper or mag articles from Canada referring to them, that will probably be all we will ever know.

My guess is that there were probably less than 10 of them sold in North America

I'll see if I can get the seller to send some larger images so we can see it better. There really isn't anything special about the motor other than the exhaust going down and out the bottom of the mid. Otherwise it is just a low compression version of the Konig B alky

Brian Hendrick is very interested in this model and might have some corrections & details I've forgotten

I don't have any particular details but that there was one from Strathroy Ontario that raced regularly from Windsor to Toronto in CBF and where I was in Local Wildcat events. Fred Ramsay was the owner. I talked to him about 4 years ago at our Wallaceburg Boat Racing Club drivers reunion. I can't remember clearly but I believe he said all his stuff had gone somewhere at the end of his boat racing period. He usually ran out front of whatever else was in B Stock at the time I think around 1957 and a bit later.

                B konig

If my memory serves me Ernie Wilson from Ingersoll ran one for a short time in latter 50s maybe early 60s. There was a dealer from Niagara Falls. That is all I can remember. John Lawrence

The dealer in Niagara Falls was Bill Crawford.

I recall my dad and I looking at a used B stock Konig in the late 70's at a race in Dunville Ontario. The racer didn't want to give it up. We ended up with a 25ss instead.

If my memory serves me correctly both Anzani and Konig submitted specs to APBA on their stock gasoline burning models but at that time (the 1950's) APBA only allowed U.S. built motors in the stock division. NOA approved it but didn't have much of a stock division. I never saw a stock B Konig but I did see a B stock Anzani on the showroom floor of Supreme Motors in Minneapolis.

Talk about rare, what a treasure. My source tells me, to the Konig collectors, this is the 300 SL Gull Wing. In my observation of over 30 years of collector outboard engines, this is the 1st one I've seen offered for sale. The ad states that it has the original Konig fuel tank and throttle to boot. Wow! Where's my banker at today? To the lucky person that acquires this engine, I hope they preserve the rich heritage it represents with great care.

                        Stock Konig

Only American built engines were allowed In APBA stock back then.
That rule somehow evaporated at some point though.

I have some information on the provenance of this particular motor.

Carl Kiekhaefer used to make the Merc engineers buy and dissect every motor they could get their hands on. The motors were taken apart, measured and reassembled and tested to see how they compared to Mercs.

This motor is supposed to have originated from Merc's stash.

I drove a 4-carb C Konig several times for a Mercury engineer that came out of the back door of Mercury.
