New J engines are available!

Thanks to Mercury Racing there are now some new J engines available to purchase through APBA headquarters. Hot new cowl graphics and a sticker on the powerhead that says solely for competition. Ya gotta love it! Kids, do you know where mommy and daddy keep the credit card?

This is a great deal if you want to get a motor all set up . There is a proposel before the J commissioners to allow racers to use aftermarket steering and throttle parts when doing there own conversions, This will allow you to purchase a complete kit from APBA for $ 545.00, or locate individual parts from outside vendors on an as needed basis ( kit parts are not sold seperately ) . This is a great deal for new comers to the sport and getting there kids started in racing. Hats off to those that worked to get a deal with Mercury to get motors for APBA. On another note while doing some checking I weighed the early two magnet flywheel against the newer four magnet one and the early flywheel is around a pound and a half lighter so before it approved there will have to some testing to see what speed differance there is. I think is is one of the things that will come up at the National meeting.

Isn't it true that there are only a limited number of these motors, or is Mercury going to continue to support this after the first batch is sold? My reason for asking is, I think that the motors should only be sold to new racers if there is only a limited number. I would hate to see them gobbled up by a bunch of veteran racers who already have Mercs.

Ryan: This is only partially correct. It is correct that APBA currently has a limited number of these engines. It is not correct that APBA cannot purchase more-it can. This engine is still manufactured by Mercury Marine just like it always has been. The only difference is that Mercury does not offer it for sale in the U.S. due to EPA regulations. It is still sold overseas, however.

All APBA has to do to obtain more is sell the ones it already has and place another order. Since these are being sold in the US only for racing, the supply will last as long as Mercury makes the model engine and as long as APBA buys them.

On another note, and just for a little insight into how long this engine might be made, nearly all foreign outboard manufactures still make small, two-cylinder, two-cycle outboards; they just don't sell them in the U.S. for the same reason Mercury doesn't; they only sell the more expensive four-cycle outboards in the U.S., which use more energy to manufacture and more energy to maintain. Thank a Democrat for that. Eddie.

Simple they don't make any money, they hay day of all forms of boat racing is long gone and the factories have lost all interest. Ask Sidd Bass and Dave Scott how many new engines they have sold over the last few years, that will be your answer.

Mercury is not going to start a new line of stock outboard motors just to sell one or two motors every six months.

Not only was it the very left slanted EPA who decided all two stroke engines kill, it was the manufacturers who have the money to fight EPA, just as the auto and aviation industries have done for 30 years. For whatever reason, the manufacturers decided it was not worth fighting and caved to the crap.

All you need to really do to show how bogus the claims against 2 stoke air quality are, is dismantle the criteria they chose for the study company who produced the statistics to " vindicate" the claim. When you do that, you will find many things left out, and certain things added that should have been looked at BEFORE they made policy.

About 1968, OMC did a study on water quality after some tree hugging buffoon group, friends of the lake of some crap like that started making noise about the mess they left in Lake Michigan. In a true to life study, one acre of water surface was used. Boats and engines were added until the began to see a detectable difference in water quality.

It took 82 boats and engines running 8 hours in that acre of water to produce what was being claimed. Many of the engines used were mixed at a quart to 6 gallons, some were newer and mixed a pint. At that time, OMC was still using whale blubber to make it's oils, there were no synthetics run.

I would like nothing more than to stick the truth down the EPA's throat, but unfortunately, at this stage of the game, that takes a great deal more money and energy than there is available to use.

Dan: You're right. But it is important for people to keep setting forth the facts. Ironic that the same group of people who complain the most about manufacturing being shipped overseas are the ones pushing for laws that cause the problem.

Kev: touche'. Actually it was liberal Richard Nixon who signed into law the Clean Air Act in 1970 and the liberal Geo. W. Bush who just signed the recent executive order requiring that emission standards be drastically strengthened. Clinton actually signed into law the amendments to the Act in 1990 that caused the 2-cycles to stop being sold.

At least we got our J and AXS engines. Thanks again to Mercury for agreeing to make these available for racing only.

Ed, We had one of the straight bars left. This is the bar in the picture. The rest are the curved bars from Brown Machine and Tool.
