Just thought I would pass this little tid bit of information along to everyone. I just got a motor shipped that weighed 190 lbs. from Seattle to Indianapolis using DHL domestic services for about 100.00 as compared to UPS that wanted $650.00 to ship the same package.

Here is the kicker though, it must be delivered business to business. They do not do any residential pickup or delivery. So to you people that have access to be able to recieve or send packages from work this is a great way to save money. It is also a plus if you have a loading dock as there is a extra charge of $50.00 to load or unload using a lift gate truck (UPS wanted $150.00). Also, you do not need to set up an account with them, so it is accessible to the average person as long as you are shipping business to business.

DHL delivers to my home, got my 125 from Rex that way. Also got a few boxes from E bay purchases delivered by them.

Yes, DHL does do home delivery, but this division of the company is for industrial and oversized shipping (that is where the domestic part comes in). Most things can get shipped via regular shipping companies, but when you have something heavy and irregular they are the way to go!

I just talked with the lady at the Seattle hub and asked her if there was a maximun size. She said that as long as you can fit it in the back of a semi then they will ship it.

Got a Tohatsu coming from Bass and informed him of what you posted. He visited with them and kind of got the run around. Basically they told him its pretty much the same as Fed Ex no packages in excess of 2x2x2 with a weight limit. Maybe were not approaching this properly. Can you help? Thanks Art K

Here is the number for the hub in Seattle. (206) 835-7193. I beleive the name of the lady I talked to is Lynn. She was very, very helpful with me, and I am sure she will be the same with you. When you call the number, during the menu options press 2 for domestic and it will take you to Lynn.

It sounds like Sid went to the regular DHL office because just like Fed EX and UPS their regular service does have a 150 pound weight limit and size limit. However, this division of DHL does not as long as you are shipping business to business.. Plus, if it does weight under 150 lbs. it still may be beneficial to get a quote from them to compare. I just got off the phone with a friend of mine that had his Konig sent up by UPS to Michigan from Illinois and it cost him about $350 bucks and I know it didn't weight over 150 lbs.

This is a long time ago (25+ years) but I once shipped and received motors Merc via grayhound. I delivered the motor packed to a grayhound depot and it was picked up at a grayhound depot. They carry it in the baggage bay. It may be worth checking to see if they still do it. Good luck!!

Grayhound still does this. If I was today to ship a motor. Break it down to a Powerhead in a box and the tower in a box, Old suitcases work good also. You will need to go to the Grayhound depot to ship and to pick it up. Works just as good as UPS and a whole lot cheaper. The old timers used to do this long before Fed-ex/UPS/ DSL etc, and it still is in place.

I know Bill Diamond uses coolers to send his powerheads to Rex and he says they work great. I was going to try and do that but when shipping a FE motor I was going to have to buy a $100.00 cooler so it would fit.

Let's see if I have this right. 1. Sid. Go down to Wallyworld and buy a kooler. 2. Bring it back to your shop. 3. pack my TooHotSuu Pee head with cowling into kooler. Huh...??? it won't fit... Okay. Go back down to wallyworld and by a 62 inch screen HDTV and use that box. Huh... you don't need a TV? Okay. Sid... go down to someplace that sells used pallets and strap the powerhead on a pallet and put it on a bus. Huh.... you don't have a strapping tool? WTF are you doing Sid? Huh? You mean it's extra work having to pack up a powerhead and then a tower assembly? Ohh how can that be Sid? You do have a bunch of illegal alien types working for you right? Okay. That's what I thought. Box it up Sid. But, for the rest of you pikers... from my experience, Business to Business is the secret to shipping the darn things.
