  • Happy B-Day Fred Miller

Couldn't help but notice the Grandaddy of the Dayton Hydrobowl had a birthday today.

Fred was the only guy in racing that could wear white pants and get away with it.

Of course, they were more gray with all the Team F-Troop grease on them.

    Enjoy.

Fred: Pretty soon, when you announce over the PA that "this is God, speaking", those in the Pits will believe that you are almost as old as Him.

Have a good one. Ed Hearn.

Fred first watched boat races on The Mickey Mouse Club Newsreel (1955)...and decided he could be like Ronnie Hill....True story!!!

Happy Birthday, Fred.....You have always been a GREAT SUPPORTER, UNSELFISHLY, of Boat Racing...Thank you!!!!

I still feel THE APBA HALL of Champions should be called THE FRED MILLER APBA HALL OF CHAMPIONS......I will always call it that!

Happy Birthday from ROSS RACING. I can't thank you enough for letting me run your DeSilva for my first race. Those 5 laps around Bell Isle hooked me. I think it is funny that when my dad took you to your first nationals you had that mishap in his Nomad. Anyway you are one of my boat race fathers ( god at dayton) and i enjoy having you around to keep me motivated. Say hi to Merry and Gordy and I will by you a beer at the National Meeting. See Ya Soon. Mikey

                  The Infamous Fred

Well now that your age has been confirmed, I guess I need to address you as Mr. Miller. Always thought of Mr. Miller as one of the guys. One of the guys never ages.

Best Wishes, and maybe its time for you and mom to get back at it in CMR or 500CCMR or whatever it is now.

I have enjoyed racing with you and working with you for many years, (and I
                    do mean MANY)
I have nothing but respect for the way you raced and worked, and commend you for your dedication to the sport of boat racing.
                    Cheers...

                      Parker Nine Hour 1968

These aren't the best pictures, but number 80 is Ted May (Crawling on the wing)...Fred Miller is standing behind Ted, getting into a BRAND NEW DESilva Runabout with twin Johnsons...boat 70 is me (Ron Hill)... In the OLD DAYS, they fired a gun and you ran to your boat...

Miller was way a head of me on the first lap when I see a giant spray of water....As I go by the spray I see Miller going down...The bottom had blown out... as I made the corner, and headed back down stream, I see Miller hugging the bow like those Indians at Knott's Berry Farm when the coyotes were chasing them up the totem pole...

Boat completely sank, leaving Miller in the middle of the river with about 1`20 boats going by...Charlie Strang has it all on film, but can't seem to find the pictures....

Always loved Freddy (MILLER)...but often wonder where, if he had any, were his BRAINS!!!

ADD: The man with his hands in his pocket is Rich Hallett and the guy in the hat is Steve Cox's dad... Steve was like an adopted son of Ted May. Steve's dad was a baker at Precillia's Cake Box owned by Ed Olsen of SK Fame...Just an FYI!!!

Bottom Picture: From Rusty Rae and Reid Blackburn's Speed and Spray...Dayton, 1974.. Miller's BU!

I always enjoyed seeing you at the races, even when you would kick my Dad - Stormin Norman's butt!!! Was always a good race to watch, and the party after wasn't so bad either. Many more!!

Happy Birthday Fred. Us Brewsters were always fortunate to be around Fred at the races here in the midwest. Having him at the races always made us feel like the event was complete. When I think of the good ol days, the first person I think of is Fred Miller.

Hope it was a great one!
