  • Jet Ski Powered Runabout

Puting a jet drive into a wood runabout would bring jet ski racers and wood boat racers together?

Jet drive is safer than prop drive? true or false?
Jet drive is slower than prop drive? true or false?

This is a very interesting theory the problem is where would the driver go ? since this is Outboard racing ? The jet drive would take up the entire cockpit.

Jet inboard runabout .... move the pump on the outside of the transome, get the shortest shaft possible and set in front of the motor.
The pic. above is only a 650. A 1200 would be more of what I would like to see some one build.

And here is another concept Idea.

        Outboard vs. inboard

        True and true.

Looks like a fun boat. Neat!
But for performance, I am biased toward outboard power like this:

Jet drive safer and slower. Keep us posted on your progress, cool project!

            Inboard Runabout

Cool idea. I`d Like to see it run. One would think a jet drive would be safer than a prop. As far as speed, probably alot has to do with power to weight ratio, hull design. always wondered if that engine your using could be mounted on an outboard tower housing Better yet, use a super charged jet ski engine

              Water Mouse???

What ever happened to the water mouse , wasn't that a rcing jet program?

                Wrong Forum!!!

woodman, i think it's a great idea , safety reasons mainly.
Problem , motor's in de' boat.
To some it could be sacrilige to take them clamps off that motor.
Let me say not only wrong forum but wrong board, some places they only make 1/2 as much fun over what ya' say.

I'm with you Rick "I`d Like to see it run."
Seems to me that we spend too much of time with the bottom of the hull out of the water for the Jet pump to work consistent. Especially a Hydro.
Although I could see 95hp. powerplant working well in a 12 foot Runabout for a record run.

Wouldn't rotating the motor 90 deg. afect the fuel pump on the carb
and the intake into the bottom end of the motor.

Unless you mount the motor out the back and have some sort of V drive to the pump.

What is the diff. with the inboard hydro prop drive , is it a V drive or direct drive, like RC boats are?

What is the diff. between the rpm's of a jet ski motor and an outboard?
How manny R's is the prop turning. The impeller on the jet pump turns that
of the motor. Could a jet ski motor handel a prop replacing the pump?

                        Not So!!!

Brett, not so if you've ever watched jet boats run you see power on they suck down but watch when they lift, one reason they have to have rudders in the water at sanctioned events.
It's a shame the water channell is no more.

True and true. This looks like a nice project however, I am partial to outboard motors. I know very little about pleasure boating but I think I have seen outboards with the gearcase removed and replaced with a jet drive. I haven't a clue as to why or how it works.

But in summary I have to say that if I wanted to be safe and slow, I'd go to Six Flags and ride the bumper boats.

I believe its tru x 2, alot of jets are faster than many kneelers because of a major power dividend. Nice Vid
