  • John Muir Trail Record

My son Aaron, a now & then boat racer, likes to do things that no one in the right mind would ever think of doing. Last year he was in the Primal Quest adventure race in Moab Utah. This year it was trying to break the record time for The John Muir Trail that goes from Mt. Whitney (highest point in the 48 states) to Yosemite Valley. This kind of record in unoffical, since there is no sanctioning body with offical timers. Aaron did carry a small recorder with him to record conversations with other hikers along the trail to validate his effort. This article was in the Fresno Bee, it was the whole back page of the sprots section.

Here is the rest of the story from Aaron:

The John Muir Trail is probably the hardest 211 (trail) miles on the planet. The current owner of the record was 63 at the time he got the record of 5 days, 7 hours.
While writing this, I have only been off of the trail for 18 hours and I am still kicking my self for not being able to be out there still. There is still plenty of fuel left in the tank and from my ankles up I am still 110% ready to go.
The front pads on both my feet are just trashed. I only got off the trail when I knew I had fallen behind enough that I couldn't make it up to be under the current record.
As of the end of day 2 I was 2 hours to the good of going under 5 days with the hardest of the trail behind me. The pads on my feet were already hurting though, but the rest of me was still pushing at a great pace with no problems. By the end of day 3, I needed to be at mile 120 to just be ahead of the current record, but my feet were hurting so badly and was costing me so much time that I was 2 hours and 15 minutes off the current record pace.
It made it easier get off the trail knowing my friend I started on top of Mt. Whitney with was already 20 miles ahead and was still moving at a tremendous pace. I will be going to Yosemite today(8/3) to see him at the finish. He should be able to finish in under 4 1/2 days.

Aaron (in blue) with the new John Muir Trail record holder. Michael Popov from Vladivastok Russia (has lived in Walnut Creek CA for 9 years) His time was 4 days, 5 hours, 25 minutes!

The one boat race that Aaron wants to do is Top O' Michigan.
