  • My recent car shopping experience...

I recently visited a car dealership to buy a car. I walked into the showroom and saw several cars on display. I walked over to the car that I was most interested in. It was a shiny new one! The latest design and style. Like clockwork, a salesman appeared from out of nowhere. This guy reminded me of Kurt Russell from the movie Used Cars. He proudly anounced to me that this dealership was this country's exclusive distributor for this make of car. I thought to myself: "That's great! I came to the right place!" The next thing the salesman said really suprised me. He said: "There is no interest in this car in this country." I couldn't believe my ears! Why would a salesman tell me his product was not disired by anybody else in the country? Strange... I opened the hood, what a nice engine! All the latest advancements. The salesman leaned over to me and said: "I've been examining this car's engine for about 3 months, it is brutal all the little things that could be done to make this car illegal!" WHAT? Next thing I knew, he put his hand on my shoulder (I hate when they do that) he led me over to an older car on the showroom floor. He says: "We've been selling a bunch of these babies! We can't keep up with the demand!" Sure, it was a nice car. But, it wasn't new. It didn't have all the latest auto advancements on it. In fact, I thought... maybe I should just rebuild my old jalopy. Then I realized, this salesman isn't interested in selling me a new car, it sounds like he'd rather sell me an old rebuilt car... I wonder why?
    Strange...

Simple answer the commission on a used car can be higher than a new one. The internet has made new car pricing impossible to fudge the sticker price. The most money is made at a car dealer is in service, financing then used cars.
