  • HELP with a Rude . . .

    Engine: 1987 Evinrude 140 hp V-4 looper.

Problem: Engine idles *ha* at 2000 rpm. I checked the butterflys and they are closed at idle. All the mechanical linkages seem to be adusted correctly. I looked at the 4 carbs which appear to be composite bodys and didn't see any obvious idle mixture screws. Under the starboard side (right) of the flywheel there was an adjusment screw setup and I fiddled with that. Counter clockwise (out) increased the rpm, clockwise decreased the rpm. But there isn't enough adjustment ot bring the idle down to a sweet purr - best I got was around 1500 rpm. This linkage appears to effect the timing seeing as how it is connected to the timing plate and the adjustment directly affected the low end timing.

HELP! I suspect the adjustment screw I fiddled with diddles with the low end timing and has little to do with the carb idle adjustment per se. Is the engine base timing out of whack? Is there an idle mix adjustment somewhere? Where should I start?

          calling . . .

*bzzzzy* I'll keep trying but Milady is gathering her fishing gear and making boat noises. When she starts tapping the toe and giving me the *glare* I'll have to head for water. If we don't connect I'll try again Thursday.

You can buy the brass threaded ends, Sierra #18-5224, then the bulk Hypalon solid core wire, Sierra #18-5226, and make your own. Plug boot is #18-5750.

no chance to try the adjustments yet. Told the guy to yank the boat so I can fiddle without hanging over the pristine swamp water of Brices Creek, which has an alligator population. He also needs the nav lights and such rewired - easy task. He's a lawyer and he's gonna owe me a favor or two
