  • Something phishy here...

I recieved an Email this morning from Bank of America. Or at least I thought it was Bank of America! Here is the text from the Email:

"Because of unusual number of invalid login attempts on you account, we had to believe that, their might be some security problem on you account. So we have decided to put an extra verification process to ensure your identity and your account security. Please click on sign in to Online Banking to continue to the verification process and ensure your account security. It is all about your security. Thank you. and visit the customer service section. "

The Email was pretty official looking, with photos, links, and disclaimers. I became suspicious right away because I have no accounts with Bank of America. Then I rolled my mouse over a link it contained, to see the address it pointed to, it didn't look right. I also noticed some misspellings and poor grammar.

I contacted Bank of America about the matter. Here is part of their response.

"The main goal of a phishing email is to get you to a site where you will provide
your personal information. With these basic, but powerful, clues, you can easily
recognize the threat and ensure the safety of your identity and finances.

    1. Does the email ask you to go to a website and verify personal information? We
won't ask you to verify your personal information in response to an email.
    2. What is the tone of the mail? Most phish emails convey a sense of urgency by
threatening discontinued service or information loss if you don't take immediate
    action.
    3. What is the quality of the email? Many phish emails have misspellings, bad
    grammar, or poor punctuation.
    4. Are the links in the email valid? Deceptive links in phishing emails look like
they are to a valid site, but deliver you to a fraudulent one. Many times you can
see if the link is legitimate by just moving your mouse over the link.
    5. Is the email personalized with your name and applicable account information?
Many phish emails use generic salutations and generic information (e.g. "Dear Customer"
or "Dear Account Holder") instead of your name.
    6. What is the sender's email address? Many phish emails come from an email address
not from the company represented in the email.
    7. When in doubt, type it out. If you suspect an email to be phishing, don't click
on any links in the email. Type the valid address directly into your web browser."

I just wanted to make everyone aware of this scam.
    Thanks for reading.

Same thing happened to me a couple of days ago on my PayPal account. It looked real official eBay logos and all. I knew it was phishing. I clicked on it to see where it would go and to see what info it would ask. Immediately Firefox popped up with a window that said something like "THIS IS PHISHING. GET OUT OF HERE RIGHT NOW'. So I did.

Turn it over to someone with authority to track

Same thing yesterday. I just deleted the email thinking Pay Pal wanted something and I have not used it in some time. Wish I had the email I would turn it to the authorities, suggest someone do that.

Pay pal and Ebay ask that you send a copy of the email to them. They will handle and action from there.
with pay pal and ebay if they send you a notice about your account you can log in and check to see if they actualy sent it in your account messages.

I did log on and checked and and that is how I knew it was phishing. Otherwise it really looked legitimate. I also knew that eBay and others don't work that way. But I just wonder how many poor people get fooled. I didn't think to forward it on to eBay.

It's a known scam going around right now. Best thing you can do is forward the e-mail to your ISP's email abuse account if they have one or to add it to your spam filters.

Watch out for this also. This was a question that came through my ebay account. I sent an email to these people as you can read. But I also sent this to ebay. Sure enough these people are trying to scam people on ebay. Ebay sent me an email their account has been closed and they are now investigating this whole matter.

How could you even ask me to do something like this!!!! Do you think that I am that dumb to fall for a scam like this? Go out and get a job. Or if this is the truth than have one of your friends do it for you. Don’t ask a total stranger to do something like this. But I have a feeling this is nothing but a scam.

Hi, let me explain what I need exactly. I'm in USA but my cousin in Russia (Russian Federation). My cousin are having a wedding and I'd like to make a present for them. I'd like your item in the gift wrap with a card inside for a bride/groom. Also I want you to send $900 via Money Gram ( www.moneygram.com) to them as an additional part of my present. The only problem is I want to make them surprised and don't want them to know that the present is from me. I'll pay for your item, packaging, Money Gram and PayPal fees via PayPal. Please let me know if you could help me with that! I want you to ship everything to them directly and to send the money present via Money Gram. I could even pay you for a trouble let's say $200 - please understand it's very important for me! I hope to hear from you soon!

Be very careful of the Bank of America scam. One of the physicians I work with thought he was logging on from the email he received and about 4 days later was minus about $6000 out of his accounts. They traced the 6 $1000 withdrawls to a hotel in CA and did replace the money but to date never caught the phisher!! If in doubt close the email and log on...never log in through an email.

If I believed the emails I recieve my Ebay and Paypal accounts are going to be locked for nonpayment, suspiciuos activity or need to change password among others. most of these are easy for me to spot as they are going to the wrong email address. Some times it is nice having more than one email account!
Please every one NEVER log on from an emailed link unless you requested it! Kristi is corect always go to the site and log in.
