Friend of mine has a 70hp "RUD" going south. I've been out look for parts, a powerhead, a complete engine just trying to see what is going to be the best way to go, have it rebuilt, replace w/used or new powerhead or whatever. Came a cross a box with all new electronics for a JOHNSON STINGER. I think they said 1977. Whats it worth?..steve..22-R..QUINAULTRACING..HAPPY HOLIDAYS

Not Much
If this is the old style ignition used, green coils, and brain box, then these are a dime a dozen, worth something, but not a ton. I still use the old style on my racing engine because the parts are so easy to find and cheap. That is around here, of course some other region will have a different outlook on parts.
If you get $50.00 for the brain box you are doing good. The rest of the stuff I would say throw it in with the brain box or try to get another $20.00 for it. New aftermarket brain boxes are under a hundred bucks. I think $80.00 last time I got one. Coils new from OMC are still available.
Now if you want the newer style igintion, (all black stuff) get the pocket book out. Not as much in the junk piles.
Since there is no way to actually test the coils and brain boxes and stattor, one is always taking a chance on buying used stuff.Dave Mason

DAVE MASON please
Dave, Thank you very much for the reply. I am not trying to sell the stuff. I have a complete STINGER that I have not done anything with. Just going to try and pick the stuff up for myself or someone that might need it down the road. If you would be so kind as to give me a phone #, I would like to talk to you about this GREEN & BLACK. Also have a few ???'s. What would be a good time to call if that is OK, I'm in reigon 10..THANK YOU .steve..22-R..QUINAULTRACING ..HAPPY HOLIDAYS AND HO HO HO

Testing OMC parts
The coils can be tested and if the system is installed all parts can be tested . A stevens 77 meter can be used for all output tests and Rapaor has the ability to bench test the power pac and the stator. The trigger should show 2-3 peak AC volts and the stator should have an output of 110 peak AC volts, at cranking speed. good luck.

no test?
My Yamahonker fixit book gives me all the resistance/voltage readings to test every elecftronic part on the engine. Equipment required, a good VOM, a lot of time, and many cool brews. I would think all brain boxes could be tested to some degree with readings off the output/input connections.carpetbagger

Yamahonker parts . . .
I know from squat about OMC. Raced the OMC 15 but those engines never gave me any trouble. The Yamahonker is an `86 engine with a lotta hours on it. Compression is still good at about 130 psi/cylinder and balanced, so I figure it's worth the effort and investment in parts to track down the spotty ignition problem I'm having. The engine is hard to start and only runs on a couple cylinders until the throttle is advanced and it lamely winds up to a few thou rpm and then the other cylinders kick in. Also, my one year old main tank oil sensor took a crap, so I need to replace that. Might have to replace the oil control brain box as well. Yet to check the electric stuff under the flywheel which is done at the box with a gazillion connections. Of course it might be crappy fuel. I'm gonna try a fresh load of gas before I start ripping a bunch a stuff apart
I'm thinking if coils and whatnot can be checked on a Yamaha, one should be able to check similar devices on other brands as well. Not sure about the newer OMC "optical" ignitions. They could be problematic.carpetbagger

You can call 269-965-8406 ask for Lyle or Dave. Dad is usually around by day and can answer your questions. Iam around some in the evening and will be happy to answer any questions if I am there.
I am interested in this testing equipment one can use for these coils, power packs, and Stators. I had a little trouble a couple years ago, and one this year and it is hard to track down the problem without replacing. We usually had a complete set of coils, brain box, and stator as a spare to slap on if needed. The stuff is easy to find, but still interested in the test equipment. I asked a few OMC dealers how they test it on stockers, but they replied replace. Is this something easy to test between heats ?
Please share your info on this Stevens 77 meter.Dave Mason

coil test . . .
VOM $9.95, or higher if you like fancy ones. Coils are a pair of wound wire coils which have a specific resistance. Measure resistance for primary & secondary and compare to factory specs. Done. If you get an open circuit reading on one or the other, trash coil - replace.carpetbagger
