Five Killed in Speedboat Crash

9-2-06 – Five people are dead after a boating crash on Lake Texoma Saturday afternoon. According to Marshall County authorities, two speedboats collided head-on during a poker run – near Buncombe Creek.

One other person was critically injured and flown to a local hospital.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, four people were in one boat and two were in another. Troopers say one boat crashed into the other at a high rate of speed.

The identities of the victims have not been released. Authorities are still trying to notify family members.

They didn't hit head on. They were going the same direction. Speculation now is that one of the drives or turbines (twin turbine with Arneson drives) broke and caused one of the boats to make an abrupt turn into the other one.

Some sites say "jet boats", but they weren't jet boats. This one - from Dallas/FT Worth area - had twin turbines. http://www.arneson-industries.com/flash_gordon.htm

I don't know about the other one. It was from Tennessee.
