  • Resonable video file sizes?

I had my helmet cam (mounted on the side of the boat for this weekend, I broke the cable with my knee when I had it on my helmet last time) running in the ASH heats on the weekend. I've tried Premier and Studio9 and can't figure out how to get the file size to a reasonable size and still be clear enough to view with mono audio. The clips are about 8 minutes long. smallest file I can get it 18mb and you can't even tell what's going on.

Any tips? Or someone know a free conversion program? I routinly see clips this long that are in the 5-10mb range. That's what'd I like to get.

Original format is on a Canon MiniDV if that helps any, looks great on the tv. I transfer through firewire to my computer.

    Thanks.

Here are a few thoughts from the desk of a Mac user

I use several different video caption and compressing programs, your best bet would be QuickTime Pro 7.

Follow the link below for info on QuickTime 7 Pro.

Two more options for Mac users only are Final Cut Pro or Final Cut Express. I use both and the end products will blow your mind!

Follow the link below for info on Final Cut Pro ( Mac Users Only ) No Windows based version to date.

Last but not least is Compressor, one word wow! ( Mac User Only )

    Compressor

Bottom line is you only want about 8mb for folks to download anything above 8mb and they grow old waiting even with high speed connections.

You can also mail the mini DV tape to me and I will let my Mac do the job where PC's fall short

Thanks for the offer Dan, but I've got to figure a way to do here other wise I'm just wasting my time.

Any idea what resolution, video sample rates and audio sample rates to set things at to make the files under 10mb? And which codec's (sp?) seem to make a huge diff... I can pick from about 10 codecs, quicktime included, in Studio9 but it doens;'t let me do custom settings if I use them. I can do MPEG 1 and 2, AVI also.

I think Studio9 is just too simple a program... I'll have to tinker more with Premier.

I'd like to keep the 30 FPS rate... if possible. FOr files that small is it?
