Cropping Pictures

I need some advice on cropping pictures to 480 x 640 for Hydroracer. When I crop old pictures I scanned in, 480 x 640 crops off most of the original picture. I played with the pixel size when scanning and the quality when saving but it doesn't seem to make a difference. I have some cool pictures but they get chopped up when resizing.
Any and all help is appreciated as I would like to share these pictures.

Tom I use a program Paint Shop Pro to resize mine but there are other programs that does it to most camras and scanners come with programs to do the same thing. I can do them for you if you want to e-mail them and will send them back to you resized.

Tom, you don't want to crop your photo to get to 640x480. You want to change the number of pixels per inch to make your large, nice photo get smaller for hydroracer.

72 pixels per inch makes a standard 5x3 (or 3x5 photo) into a 640x480 (or 480x640) web-sized picture. It's horrible if you want to print it, but it looks fine on a computer screen.

Hint: keep a full-sized scan of your photo, like oldboat.jpg and then save a copy, renaming it to oldboatSM.jpg - then resize the one named oldboatSM.jpg.

E-Z Breezy for me . . .

I have a Kodak digital which loads into the Kodak picture program which bites the big one. After loading I fire up the HP photo program, pick a pic, click edit, resize, 640 X 480 and save. Done.

Thank you all for the information. I have been using "Resize2Mail" and it really works great if you want to "crop".
LeeAnn, I think you hit it on the head what I was looking for. I will try what you advised.
