    beaver penn

Thanks you Ron. Good to hear from you. I did win at beaver penn. Beat Clark Maloff. Most of the props i ran were pop smith wheels. I still miss those good days.

I used to hear stories about Stover Hire all the time from my father, Jack Brewster and especially my Uncle Jim Brewster. Jim always told us stories during break at the sawmill about he and Stover battling through the turns, etc. Stover was his benchmark for success, that's for sure. Not sure if you remember those guys Stover, but they sure remember you. Jim has since retired to farm country in So. Ohio and Dad still comes to races to ref a couple each year.

I wish I could remember some of the stories but I'm sure my brother Jeff can. We heard them everyday.

      Happy B-day to the legend!

        It's a pleasure ...

... to have gentlemen like Stover Hire here in our midst from time to time.

Stover, you must have tons of photos that would be most welcome viewing here. Any chance you can dig out a few of your favorites to share with the us ...

Tom until I saw your post, it never sank in that Harold Berghauer was your grandpa....

When Harold and your Grandmother , Orilla (Spelled wrong) would come west to Parker or Havasu, Harold would always bring brandy for my dad. Why?, we neve really figured, as may dad only drank brandy when he was with Harold Berghauer....

I loved your grandfather like a father... When I won the Beloit Nationals in DU, 1970...HAROLD KNEW I'd never had my "D" apart...He knew my dad had done every part of it....So, in inspection, Harold offered to help me take the motor apart..Edgar asked for something lke the reed block, next thing I knew Harold had the carbs apart...I'd say, "Hey, Edgar didn't ask about the carbs..." Then, Edgar would ask about something else...Next thing I knew Harold had the mag apart...I'd go what the hell?? Harold said something like..."Well, I was just looking.."

After I'd passed inspection, Harold said, "Hey, can I buy your gas?" I said, "No you can have it."

My Old man and Harold always got along like brothers....
Please say "Hello" to your grandmother..Maybe, I'll get up there and see her this summer...

Truth is, Stover..."Those were the good OLD DAYS" I finished 3rd or 4th in BU at Beaver....Charlie Strang weighed me...Then said, "Do weigh the boat and engine...I know it doesn't weigh 90 pounds..." As I weighed in at 255 with jacket and helmet....

Stover, don't forget my encyclopedia with your pictures..www.boatracingfacts.com

            Family Tree

            Hi Ron,

It's all one big happy family up here in Wisconsin.

OK, here goes...And this is only the half of it...My dad (Vern Kargus) married my mom (Jan Berghauer). They had (5) kids. Their two boys (me and brother Dave) raced. Two of my three sisters married racers. My sister Krysti Kargus-Allen married Don Allen Jr. They have (5) kids who now race. Their oldest, Donny Allen III just turned 21. See the "Happy Birthday Donny Allen" thread here on hydroracer. I posted a picture of Grandpa Berghauer from 1980 on that thread...
So from Grandpa Don Allen Sr. to Great-Grandpa Harold Berghauer, the Allen kids have boat racing in their blood. They are hybrids...

There were many others in the family that have races as well. My uncles, the Berghauer brothers, Denny, Duey and Dee arguably the most "famous"...

I hope this clears it up for you Ron.
PS. I go on your site once in a while. It's a great site..

I may have married into the Berghauer clan but they still never allowed me to get into the basement where all the racing stuff was. Grandpa B would say you have to wait here. I just laughed, he said what's so funny. I said, even if I did go down there I would have no clue what I was looking at. He said non the less your not coming down.

I was so impressed with Grandpa B knowledge. He would walk to somone having a problem and just say something like, did you check..... 99% of the time he was right.

I feel privideged. I was allowed in the basement. It probably didn't hurt that we didn't run the same classes. Also, my grandfather, Bill Leutner and Mr. B. were very good friends.

Hey Tom, I still think about the fishing trips to Canada.

My Grandpa, Vern and Mr B. took us kids fishing a number of times into Ontario.
The group of kids included myself, Tom, brother Dave, cousins Greg and Boss
Berghauer. We had a great time except at the time Boss and I didn't get along. In fact we had traded blows, nothing serious though.

We would fish all day from sun up until supper. We caught piles of walleye and northerns. I still have the pics. Of course every day we had a shore lunch.

One of Mr B.'s favorite expressions was, " like I always say, try it".

                Great memories!

                Sorry you were excludud Don.

Tim, I thought his favorite saying was, come over here ,then when you were next to him he would kick you in the rear end, You would say what was that for and he would reply for whatever you did that I don't know about.

I think at that time he considered me..."that guy from Region 6". And yes it didn't help that I raced the same class.

I would like to hear from some "old timers" what it was like to race against a legend like Stover Hire...
