US tax forms comply with the 1964 "paperwork simplification act." Prior to 1964 the deduction thing you filled out when you got a new job was 1/4 of a page and you *complexly* indicated the number of deductions - kids, wife, whatever. The same form is now 4 pages and includes lots of *simply* mathematical calculations.
Reminds me - got anastygram from the IRS about my 2004 return. Seems my doofus stockbroker *forgot* to send me the same 1099 he sent the IRS. another $2,500 bites the dust . . .
