  • Don Warnock Passing 2/03/06

Don Warnock passed on this past Friday afternoon 2/03/06. Enclosed below is a short summary of his life.

Yes, Don raced boats from 1949-1953 in the A Utility class under the then NOA halo and club IOA. Running a Van Pelt runabout named "Scuttlebutt" with a KG4 with a new quicksilver tower and gearcase, one of the first in his area. Yup, a real runabout even with a front seat. Don raced against the Rinkers of that time and possibly Stover Hire.
Interestingly his Mom did not know he was racing boats until she read an article in the local newspaper. What a Rebel, Hey!
Don was an awesome mentor to his son's when it came to racing. Words of wisdom like "How about getting a better start would help"! Some mentors just have a firm grasp of the obvious and have away with words to reaffirm it. Bet you guys never heard such words from your mentors!!!!
The challenges of a couple engineers building boats made for some interesting basement discussions.
Don loved boat racing and the people surrounding the sport. The engineering challenges that the sport offers, the freedom of the gypsy weekend lifestyle and the many freindships he made across the US and Canada.

God Bless you Don! God Bless you Dad!!

Donald H. Warnock was born on December 28, 1926 in New Castle, Indiana. His parents were Jesse and Sarah (Smith) Warnock.

After graduating from New Castle High School, Donald served his country in the Army Air Corp from June 1945 until November 1946. After honorable discharge Donald began a career in manufacturing engineering. His early career included work on B-52 and B-70 bombers and F-108 fighter aircraft. Through several jobs in sheet-metal manufacturing, which took him and his family to Madison and Milwaukee, Wisconsin, he completed his career as Vice President of Engineering /Sales for the Maysteel Corporation located near Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After a brief “retirement” he managed start-up of a manufacturing facility in Galway, Ireland also for Maysteel.

Donald enjoyed many hobbies including gardening, camping, traveling, and most notably being the “architect” and mentor to his sons and granddaughter in the sport of Stock Outboard hydroplane racing. Donald was a “master” woodworker and has built more hydroplanes than can be recalled, and an ice boat which he sailed on the frozen lakes of Wisconsin. Behind his craftsmanship and guidance, several National Hydroplane Championships have been captured by son Steve and now granddaughter Rachel.

Donald’s most enduring fascination was with the magic of “flight”. He was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association, was a licensed private pilot, plane owner and helped to refurbish vintage aircraft.

Donald passed away on February 3rd, 2006 as a result of injuries resulting from stroke.

He was a resident at both Sombrillo Nursing and Rehabilitation and Aspen Ridge Lodge during his four years in Los Alamos.

Donald is preceded in death by both parents, his beloved wife of 49 years Phyllis Jean Upchurch, brothers Myron Richard Warnock and Charles Francis Warnock, all with origins in New Castle, Indiana.

Donald is survived by his sister Mary Cenzalli of Marietta, Georgia, sister-in-law Elaine Warnock of New Castle, IN, sons Stephen Richard (Darlene), of Pewaukee, Wisconsin, Phillip Bennett(Sandra) of Los Alamos, New Mexico, four Grandchildren Scott Andrew and Jamie Lynn of Los Alamos, NM and Rachel Lee and Michael Stephen of Pewaukee, WI and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at Schmidt & Bartelt Funeral Home in Sussex, Wisconsin, Hwys 164/”J” on Wednesday, February 8th from 4-7pm. Additional visitation will also be held at Macer-Hall Funeral Home, 600 South Main Street, New Castle, Indiana on Friday, February 10th from 4-8pm. Services will be held Saturday February 11th, beginning 10:00AM followed by graveside Military Honors at South Mound Cemetery.

Our Prayers to the Warnock Family

                Steve,
Your father was a true gentleman and a joy to see and talk to at the races. I will remember the last time we talked was at the Whitney Point Nationals and you were in North Carolina mending a Motorhome.
He said he was not sure if you were going to make it to the Nationals but he was going to enjoy the week pitting for who was the highest bidder or
" who had the best dinners and beer to offer", So we sat there that night and had Steak and all the fixens and of course a few beers "Budweiser" my pleasure.
Just talking about the great friendships we encounterd through the world of boat racing and how he enjoyed the comeradery with friends.

                Our thoughts and prayers.

                  our condolences

                  Steve, Darlene, Rachel, Michael,

Our condolences go out to your family during this tough time. Growing up in and around Region 6/7 as a kid I was at many races that the "Hawk Hydro Team" was tearing up the water and your dad was always there seeing you off to the race course and quietly cheering you on until you met him at the water's edge. I'm sure that you had many great memories together.
