  • Nothing to do with Racing

I bought a Chevy Pick-up new in 2005, It has over 291,000 miles and still has never had the brakes replaced or serviced. The brake pads and rotors are still good.

I had a 2000 GMC that I sold with 210,000 with perfectly good original brake pads, rotors and discs. When you drive like a normal person
it is amazing how well things last.

I had a Black 1985 Ford T bird 5.0L V8, bought it in 87 with 20k and donated it in 2000 with 240k, drove it kindly but romped it on occasion. It had a digital dash with digital odometer. When it reached 200k it went back to 100k? Guess the engineers didn't think it would get over 200k so they never programmed it beyond that. Also love those non-interference push rod non fancy engines.

Anytime I hear the phrase "non-interference", it leads me to think the person had a timing chain or belt break.

Well the 85 Ford T'bird had a phenalic (sp) cam gear (was told they did that for quiet running?) and the wife driving to work plastic teeth broke and the chain slipped, car dead, towed home. Had no idea it was plastic or I would have changed it when I did the water pump at 165k. Good that it was a non interference engine, dumped the oil and filter replaced the crank and cam gears and chain and off it went, changed the oil and filter at a few short intervals thereafter then to 240k, then donated it to the boys ranch.

One other thing the car had a 25gal gas tank and a 27 mpg highway (did have throttle body injection) and could get 650 miles between fill ups and gas to spare, loved it. Distance to empty computer was accurate.

One thing about my Ford that was a problem and maybe still is? Mine had plastic window regulator components and they are crap. Had to replace pass and driver side window regulators.

My 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 Sport (5.9L automatic, 2wd) now has 307K+ and gets 21-22mpg on hwy, starts/runs/idles nice and has ice cold air conditioning. If it dies, I'll get the engine rebuilt. This truck had mostly hwy miles to 100K, then I towed boats almost every day at work for 5yrs. Now it spends most time sitting and gets used for towing or hauling maybe once a week.

Original engine/tranny/drivetrain. 3rd radiator (one was my fault), new harmonic balancer, new belts & hoses a couple times. Has never left me stranded.

          Tom

My '99 Ram 1500 has almost 200,000. It's just getting broke in.

All these high mileage cars must have great maintenance. I have always used regular (non syn but lately syn blend) Brand name 10w-30 oil at 4-5k changes + filter and other usual fluid changes of coolant, tranny brakes, etc and get great life out of cars. What are your maintenance brews for long life?

One of the only Brand new vehicles I have ever purchased was. 1992 GMC Jimmy. When I finally had to get rid of it, body was shot, motor still good, it had over 600,000 kilometres on it,(from Canada). Regular maintenance, standard oil every 5-6000KM. My father was a mechanic and always said to look after your vehicle and they will last.
