Always sad to read an old racer has passed. I never got a chance to meet Wally, he was retired as a driver when I came around. He was legendary in the Florida circuit. He obvisely had the money to buy the best, but the best doesn't win if you can't drive it. Wally was a driver. He was generious too in allowing racers to test on one of the lakes that supplied water for one of his orange groves. When I came to Florida the first time 1978, Lake Mattie was the place to go testing. On the North end of Auburndale, it was out in the woods then. You could camp there and test all week before one of the Grapefruit Circuit races. You got to meet up with racers from all over the country. Camp fires at night and sometimes the Florida gang would bring an old hydro to tow behind a pick up through the orange grove. Those stories are legendary too! RIP Wally in that great pit area in Heaven!
