i just heard that buddy winemiller passed away last Saturday, 12/19/15 on his 74th birthday. I traded him for my first racing engine in 1970, a mark 30h. buddy raced before I first got started in 1971, but in recent years you could see him wandering the pits at lochhaven, pa, sharptown,md or Wilson nc. his trademark was his long handlebar mustache and smoking a pipe. he always stopped by and chatted with john mach, george resh and myself. I will miss our chats and seeing him in the pits. race in peace buddy.

I first met Buddy during the 1980's when DMR was just getting it's legs on the east coast. Northeast drivers such as Don Fryklund, RC Howie, Fuzz and Fred Melanson, Mike Forino, and myself had expanded our travel schedules to make the trip to race at places like Denton and Camden and Lock Haven.
I would also add to his trade mark items, Those Maryland flag pants!!
One time, I remember loaning him a prop, and as it seems, it ran well enough for him to out run me to the finish, but he didn't pass me, jokingly, I scolded him for not passing me, and his reply was, it didn't seem proper to beat me with something I had just loaned him.
A true measure of Southern manners, friendship and hospitality, Buddy you will be missed....
Race in Peace
PeteDon't laugh.....it's borrowed!!

Another said day in boat racing. As we get older these times seems to happen too often. Buddy was a quite man who accepted help when needed, and sometimes not needed, silently listening and puffing on the pipe, he may accept that advise or not. For instent I remember his stock 102 crapping out only a few feet from the pits, but the engine ran on the shore. I suggested the head gasket was blown. He sort of said no. I just went and changed it so he made the next heat. He asked the cost of the gasket and at that time it was $5.00, he gave me $20.00. I said that wasn't needed, he said thanks and keep it. Remember it was at Camden, NC and we went to the pig roast together.
Never was going to be a Championship racer, but was always there attending the local races, supporting them not just as a competitor but helped in setting up or tearing down the committee stuff. I haven't seen him in 15 years or so, just the way we move our lives. RIP Buddy!

After he retired from driving, Buddy typically made fall Lock Haven and usually came to inspection where he and I would have a couple conversations. This year he was planning to put together a motor and was looking for a few hard to find parts. He was a fixture in Region 4 who I first met at Camden. To re-quote RC, "this thing is happening way too often". Rest in peace, Buddy.

There is an online Guestbook at the site above.
I'll be searching for pictures of Buddy in the days ahead. More to come...
Prayers to his family and friends.

Buddy posed for my son Austin to take a photo, but I'm not sure I ever told him that it won a ribbon at our county fair.

I'm guessing this photo was taken at Sharptown, MD and the year was 2005, give or take.
