I may have the opportunity to buy a nice older shovel head hydro. I have had the pickle fork Has anyone had experience with a/b shovel.
Pete
Hello Pete,
I was one of the first "A" guys to be successful with a "Pickle Fork" A Stock Hydro". That was 1973, and I broke the 1-2/3 mile record two years in a row with that boat. Then in 1977, I went back to a "Shovel Nose" design and broke the record again in 1979. Then we raced that design until we retired in 1986. But in 1986, when the OMC "A's" came out, my son set the Kilo, 1-1/4, and 1-2/3 records with that design. Since then, Pickle Fork designs seem to be the "Standard". It would be interesting to see if another Shovel Nose design could compete. Those specific Shovel Nose designs were done for High Jacked Up KG4 setups, with the prop shaft at 1-1/8" above the bottom of the boat.
So to answer your question, yes, Shovel Nose designs can work.
What design is the boat you are considering and what are you planning to do with it?
I have pictures of the boat on my email could sent to you if I had your email.
The boat is shown with a 20H motor on the back.. I think this was done just for show.... He is selling hydro with a KG4H.... He said he would separate. The smallest motor I have is a KG7H. My last hydro was a hemp with an 80Yamato 62MPH The boat got on plain like right now. I know very little about these boats Looks nice.... hope to get your email

The pickle fork design came about because it is easier to control the amount of lift that is built into the boat. The faster the class the less lift you want. In ASH and 200ccH a round nose hydro is no detriment to performance ( Andy Hansen wins a lot with just such a boat and it's not an antique boat either ). There is just a lot more to it than the shape of the nose.
