  • Should I expose a boat racer as a fraud in this forum?

Let me start by saying this; My family has been running a very successful boat business since 1971-72. Pans, this next year will be my 24th year of boat racing. My company sells and repairs propellers (and boats) We are old school and believe that when you promise something you do it (no matter what). We have LOST money on a lot jobs when things don't go as planned. That's part of being a stand up dealer/human. Basically, you always do what is RIGHT, not what covers your buttocks when "you" make a mistake. My reason for this post is; We have a racer (that I referred a client to) that took payment for services that were NEVER performed. It wasn't a lot of money, but it ended up costing my loyal customer around $10,000. This makes me & my business look bad, and obviously the client can't believe that we would direct him to such an inept person.
So, my delima is; do I tell the boat racing community specifically what this guy did? And who this person is? BTW, I HAVE asked for "months" for him to return the money, and call my customer and apologize. (& just for clarity, This is a "black & white" or "obvious" deal. Not the typical "he said, she said", thing) thanks, Bryan

We would really rather you work the issues out amongst yourselves but if they sell equipment on this site then folks should probably know since a lot of deals went bad in 2013..

Also make sure this is a racing issue

The web boss may have more on this issue tomorrow.. Please wait till then

      I say yes...

      Bryan,
I would say yes, only after all reasonable avenues have been exhausted. You don't want anyone else to be taken advantage of, and sometimes people like this need to learn a painful lesson in order to realize that the way they do business is not acceptable. It is possible that just by posting your question that you have gotten their attention and this issue can be resolved.

I learned, at a young age, in my Dad's outboard repair shop that you need treat every customer as if they are your only customer.

I think that if the site boss nods & the problem still goes unresolved that to do it in steps would be good, 1st lay out the details. Then offer 1 more opportunity to resolve this in the knowlege that it will be exposed otherwise. Then make the call accordingly. Good Luck

This is a business deal gone bad--like it or not there is always two sides to the story regardless how it seems to you. That's what they have courts for.
Think of it as to cost of doing business and move on.
Our business puts up with this kind of stuff all the time--good deal gone bad.

But I do not believe this is the place to talk about it....Use Facebook--my sons have a deal were a famous entertainment person is trying to beat them out of $90,000.00 and everyone would know who he is...so it looks like back to the courts again.

You ask a very good question. Racing or not, it’s a good question.

I agree there are always two sides to a story/deal.

I feel we were done wrong on a boat racing deal a few years back. It was for a lot of equipment for about the same amount of money. Not everything was junk but a large majority of it was. The other person does not feel they screwed us over. Tuff lesson learned, I chose not to put it on HR. I will and have told many people who the person was and what the deal was, because they have asked. Funny thing is I was telling another person the story and they told me they felt they were done wrong by this person’s teammate.

But that's just me. Heck, I'm just itchin' to hear the dirty laundry.

Bryan, as hard as it is to keep still, at this time it probably isn't good to put anything in writing that could ever come back to haunt you. If it does ever go to court, then you have proven your case and blast away. Karma always prevails in these cases. Sometimes we just don't know how, but it does.
Terry and I have sold equipment over the years, and have forever given an extra prop to try, upon return or payment and never been paid, taken half payments and never been paid, or loaned equipment and never have it returned. We, as most boat racers would probably be rich if we could recoop some of what is owed to us. Then there are the vultures. Eventually the truth always comes out and everyone sees what has happened. Just make sure you tell everyone you know in words, verbal, not written.
And in a real business situation, take them to court. Nothing personal, just business. You and your family business is an upstanding one. Explain to your customer. This is not the first jerk you have or ever will run across. Your good reputation will prevail. If it were me I would let Teresa know what happened in a private message. She can decide what you should do pertaining this site.

                      Love ya.

Thanks for your comments, first of all I am out no money on this deal (hours of work, but no money)......... Brief description of details/facts; 1. boat racer down on his luck contacts me for ANY marine appraisal work (he is certified appraiser) 2. I, send a customer to him for an Allison craft that has been highly modified, basically a one off custom (example: a 2014 stingray corvette compared to a Hennesey modified 2014 stingray "BIG replacement difference") This boat was stolen and insurance company is offering him peanuts for what the rig is worth & insured for. Appraiser demands half of agreed payment up front and was sent to him promptly 3. I am asked to provide a letter describing all we have done to this boat and receipts for all the custom fiberglass work, which my secretary RE-did several times until he was happy with the way it looked (kinda what you pay an appraiser for?). 4. Countless phone calls go unanswered or unreturned for months. 5. Guy finally has to settle with insurance company for original low amount 6. I call and leave another message as I am livid at this point that he has done nothing, he finally calls and leaves me a message that he mailed the packet to the customer..........BUSTED!! He never had my customers address!!! This is the exact way it went down. But, if there is another side to the story BRING IT ON.

to tell or not to tell

We all have stories of deals gone bad. In my 40 year engineering consulting career I have a bunch. Some went to court and was still screwed even with a rock hard contract in my favor. Getting a judgement is one thing collecting is quite another . At the time I forgotaboutit them and took the business loss but was sure to verbally tell all I knew about the bad guys.

Yes this is a boat racer but the topic has nothing to do with racing itself so I say we let it lie.. I also believe you don't want names in type due to the sue happy world we live in..
