All,
With winter upon us and little action at our local bodies of water, we're seeing more and more posts in forums like these. And sometimes, in spite of well-meaning passion, we tend to get a little carried away. The end result is that feelings are hurt and people get misunderstood, and ideas that might actually be really GOOD get lost in the heated rhetoric. And, there's always that concern that a potential new racer who sees some of this might get put off, and not want anything to do with us. Not a good scene.
With that in mind, I have come up with 10 Simple Rules that should be adhered to when posting in ANY online forum. These are not just limited to proper etiquette on this site; this could apply to any online forum, on any topic whatsoever.
Please read these, and learn them. You can all thank me later.
1) Leave any sense of reason or common sense at the door before you log in. It won't be needed.
2) Make sure you come with a sense of outrage, self-righteous indignation or entitlement.
3) Alcohol is a perfect social lubricant prior to sitting down before posting. So is a lack of sleep, mild psychosis and recreational drugs that are delivered in a pipe or homemade cigarette.
4) For God's sake, NEVER check your spelling. Don't forget that garbled syntax and improper, inaccurate punctuation are essential in winning others over to your way of thinking. While frowned upon by many, CAPS LOCK is always good for keeping people on their toes, and makes you look even more important.
5) Anyone who has an opinion other than yours MUST be attacked, on a personal level, if at all possible. Do not limit these attacks to the person themselves...be sure to include their parents, spouse, siblings, children and pets whenever possible.
6) Any act of kindness or concession offer posted as a solution to a problem or challenge is a sign of weakness, and therefore a threat. Question, deride, criticize, and generally treat such posts with suspicion.
7) Name calling is always a welcome addition to any topic. So is blaming Obama.
8) If you have ever gotten some sort of Raw Deal, or perceived Raw Deal....and let's face it, we ALL have....make sure that you bring that into ANY discussion you participate in, no matter how irrelevant or off-topic it might appear to be. Grind your axe long and with pride!
9) Never trust another person's posts, even if you agree with them. They're using a Jedi Mind Trick.
10) Finally, believe EVERYTHING you read here. Every letter of it is absolutely, 100 percent true.
Love,
R-19
