  • A Rookies Journey, Hydroracer, and the 'Disease'

I was born into a boat racing family that many from the Midwest are familiar with. I spent many a Saturday and even more weeknights admiring my Grandpa's ability to design and build what were to me the most beautiful boats in the world. I watched my Dad race many times and my uncles win multiple national championships. All of this gave me the disease that we on this site are all familiar with. Yes, I have the boat-racing addiction gene buried deep within my genetic makeup. But when I was 11 years old and finally getting old enough to really get involved, my family retired from racing. A few years later we moved to Texas and lost all contact with the boat racing world that we knew. I was left wondering and dreaming what it must be like to actually drive one of those things, yet resigned to the fact that it just never would happen.

Fast forward nearly 30 years...home computers...the internet...and BAM!...I stumble across something called 'Hydroracer.net'. Remember that gene I said was buried deep within my genetic makeup? Well, it is no longer buried but now revived and very much alive. I reach out to a name I remember from my childhood, Art Kampen, end up helping him in the pits at a race. Yep, you guessed it, the addiction has returned and stronger that ever!

The following year, Jeff Ruth offers me a ride in his CSH. Are you kidding me? Is this really going to happen? Will my years and years of dreaming and wondering finally culminate with me grabbing the wheel, squeezing the throttle, feeling the boat going on plane then the sponsons rising off the water? Really? Really? It did happen and it is an experience I will not forget!

I said all of that to say this...I just purchased my own rig and went testing for the first time this past Saturday. What a blast!. This would not have happened without the generosity and assistance of many folks. At the risk of forgetting someone, I would like to thank the following people...Art Kampen, Jeff Ruth, Dudley Malone, Andy Seay, and the many folks in the NBRA who have treated me as a friend from the first race I attended with them. To Mark Daspit for selling me top notch equipment at a very reasonable price. To Jack Stotts for treating this boat racing 'nobody' with respect and offering his assistance as well. To my local buddies here who have helped in more ways that I can count...Dennis Burke, Joe John Schulte, and Gardner Miller.

And last but definitely not least, my wife. Without her support this journey would not be nearly as special as it is (I even have a pic of her helping me strip the old varnish from my boat). How cool is that!!!

First pic is me and my buddies getting her set up for the fist time.

Second pic is my brother Kenton, my son Ryan and Joe John getting me launched for the frst time.

See ya on the course in 2013!

    Congrats on your efforts Dennis.

Your Uncle"s Bob and David will be proud of you I'm sure. It's a shame Lynn is not here to share in your fun, but he would be proud also.

Have a great time and let me know what props are working for you. I might have something that will help.

Dennis, Thank you for letting me help you live your dream. We are kindred spirits, as unlikely as that seems...but I promise, nobody understands being the son of a legend more than I do. And as you make your first start this year, I will be there rooting you on. You have a fantastically supportive family and a spectacular wife. Thank you for your understanding, Cherie. Dennis, you are a lucky man. Joe John

              Welcome

Welcome aboard Dennis. I know the path has been long coming, and you have worked hard to get to this point. I am glad to see the boat all fixed up and on the water. If you need anything, let me know, I imagine Gardner will be flowing throuh MI sometime during the Holidays, we could arrange for him to take something back if ou need it.

Next step, put a pipe on that thing !!

Thanks Bill. I talked with Craig Dewald today and now I know what I have tested. I'll send you a pm.

See what I mean about all the support I have received? Thanks everyone.

And Dave, since you are a commissioner maybe you can convince the NBRA that I get a rookie handicap and I can run that pipe in CSH. You do that and you gotta deal!! Maybe then I can do what Doc asked, and stay in front of Braxton...well, maybe for one lap anyway!

Congrats Mr. Dennis! Looking forward to seeing you on the water next year! Don't go out running us TOO bad as a rookie! Haha.

And just a heads up for all you guys in the Texas club... I am still trying to fix an issue that is currently hindering me from posting the videos I have from the race in Jacksboro this year. I will have them up as SOON as I am able.

Thanks John, but not much chance I am going to outrun anybody next year. The equipment is good enough alright but the driver, well that's another story altogether.

Looking forward to those vids too.

                          Dennis-
I meant to tell you a couple of things, I can't remember if I did or not... Whatever.
But, when you get out there with a bunch of other boats, about 3/4 of the way down the straight, sometimes that boat will go to buckin" a little bit, may be a little spooky at first, but (this is important) KEEP SQUEEZING THE THROTTLE, and it will usually
sort itself out, just gotta sorta ride thru it. It's no big deal most of the time, don't worry about it.

Oh yeah, and occasionally in some turns it kind of wants to help you get around the buoys a little... Not every time, just every so often it gets a little anxious and the back end wants to kinda get up even with the front end... When that happens, what I do is- just kinda wedge your hips in there a little cockeyed, and stretch your left leg over to the back right corner, push on the transom, you should feel it flex a little, and that ought to take a little of the "whoopee" out of it. Don't worry, just practice that maneuver a couple times and you'll get it.

Well, I think that ought to .... no wait one more thing, that prop is the one that Jeff Ruth froze to his prop shaft and had to cut the hub in 3 pieces to get it off, but it's all good... he stick welded it back together. But just in case, keep your eye on it, (you know Jeff) and if it starts to vibrate really bad again, you might think about shuttin' it down.

Well, now you know everything I know... Good Luck Dude!

Wow Mark, you sure know how to instill confidence in a new driver....NOT!!

I hope your memory is getting your boat racing and your bronc-busting mixed up and that bucking you refer to is from a horse and not the boat. And if Jeff welded the prop I have no worries. It's probaly 2mph faster because of it.
