Racing safety over the years
Watching that video you get the idea that those drivers must have known the risks they were taking. That was the day when drivers were made out of TOUGH stuff!
Funny thing; when you're in the car and the green flag drops, the only thing you can think about is the car ahead of you and how you're going to get around it.
Last March, a friend of mine let me drive his Kurtis copy Chevy 2 alky powered midget in a heat race at Orlando Speed World.
That car has a single roll bar that only comes up to just above the bottom of my helmet, and a lap belt. No full harness, roll cage, HANS device or anything like it.
When driving it, I wasn't thinking about what would happen to me. I was rather more concerned about how I would pay for the darned thing if I stuck it on the wall!
Someone who has all the quotes in the world can name the person who said this (or something very like it). When the full roll cages came out for the open wheel cars, he said: " Oh, great. Now [I]anyone[I]will think they can be a race car driver!"
