Yep, took the engagement plunge last weekend - you make it sound like a bad thing! To answer a few questions: no, a propeller is not a proper engagement gift (a painted helmet is borderline). No, not getting married at Lawrence. Yes, a winter wedding is appropriate. No, Depue will not be our honeymoon. And yes, driving JW's 1100r is on for sure.
Speaking of weddings, I think Zach M. still needs to sell his 250 to pay for ribbon for his wedding, so give him a hand if you can.
Take it froma guy that's been happily married for a few years. Mostly the early ones, and not consecutively, but you get the idea Seriously, all the best.
Excuse me John, but I don't think you have got the official okay from the Seattle Outboard Association (SOA) membership yet? Next general meeting is December 27th:-).
BTW, I have a relative (I think you know him & his fiancee) getting married during the same time frame as you and Jodi...next winter + outside of the racing season. Don't know what happened to church weddings & potluck receptions $$$ (see Zach & selling 250 equipment to pay for wedding ribbon), but...just a though...maybe the four of you want to consider a joint venture? I know I speak for my sons parents in saying, we are up for not mortgaging our house? Heck, I'm up for paying for a Las Vegas wedding.
Of course I'm kidding on point #2, but serious on point #1.
I must agree that the price of a wedding is out of site.. Back in 2002 we paid for our daughters wedding and we could of bought three complete Bill Tetro trailers with all the boats and motors for what we spent..And then it only lasted two years!! That will not happen to John and Jodi but just saying keep it simple and dont start off in a really big hole..
So, reality hit. And it hit hard. I thought the engagement deal was tough. Nope, that was the easy part.... The great thing is Jodi knew right off the bat that the wedding was going to be a winter date. I pushed for the 24-months-from-now winter - nah, she's not going for that. It's the 12-months from now winter. Hit again. Now she's looking at wedding dresses 24-7. I'm screwed. I can buy a new Toohawtsue for what she wants to spend on a single piece of clothing she'll only wear once. At least I own a printing company so the invites won't cost me too much.
But here's my current plan: forget everyone else, go to the southern hemisphere like Tahiti or something, get married there and double it up as a honeymoon - two birds with one stone. Once back, have a weekend-long reception where everyone brings their motorhomes/tents and hangs out (yes, testing will be available Saturday morning); or something like that. Best thing is, I think I have her convinced that's a great idea - I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
SO, Jim, to answer you indirectly, no, I don't want to sell my hypothetical 250 for ribbon; I'll just be a good ol' fashion selfish, cheap-ass.
With quite a few Reg 10 member getting married, it reminds me of a story that Jimi O. told me. In his driving days, in a full field of CSH'a, ever one of the 12 guys in the heat were either divorced or single - that's a lot of angst heading into the first turn! Hopefully that's not us in 10 years, but something tells me that if there are 12 guys all married heading to the first turn, the exact same amount of angst would be present!
Congratulations on your marriage plans and engagement, John & Jodi!
I like your "south seas" wedding plan, John. The two of you might as well get a little extra fun out of the event for all of the money that you will spend. We did the "party after" reception thing and it worked out really great.
