  • Drowning Doesn't Look Like Drowning

Since we are headed into summers full swing and the racing season, I thought I would pass this article on to all my boat racing friends. http://mariovittone.com/2010/05/154/ Please be safe this season and keep a close eye on the little ones that like to swim and play in the water between heats and after the races.

Good post Jeff, we have already had several drownings this year here in the city and the official start of summer as not even started yet.

    Be safe everyone.

Thank you very much Jeff A. for bringing this to our attention.
This post brings to my mind an incident that happened many many years ago. While I was racing in a small local club, one of the "J" kids was messing around in the water during the races. Everybody was busy watching the race, not the kid. Whatever happened is unclear, but the kid nearly drowned right in front of at least 50 people. Thank God he was seen and rescued just in time. Shortly after the incident, our club adopted a new safety rule, NOBODY under 16 years old in the water during racing. It's a very good rule.

I once saw a skinny kid slip out the bottom of a life jacket while being lifted onto a boat. I now require all small kids on my boat have a crotch-strap attached to the life jacket.
I use the strap off of a gear bag cliped to the straps on the jacket.
