Just got a call from Noel Paul of New Bern NC----T.Douglas Temple 111 was killed yesterday in an accident relating with a 4 wheeler---those who ever raced in Region 4 or other close regions knew Doug, as he was a fierce competitor in BSH and BSR--great guy, always was the man who cooked those great pigs at our Camden NC race, he will be missed by all who knew him, a loss to Scotland Neck community---more info on arrangements soon. He will be missed by all.

My Condolences.............
We just saw Doug at Wilson a few weeks back and he still looked the same from back in the 70's!! What a shame, Doug was one of the good guys from Region 4.....

I Thought About Doug Last Week....
I managed to get a part of a peanut caught in my windpipe. That little brown skin caused be to cough like crazy.....It seemed like it was there all week. My mind flashed back to Dayton 1974 when I first met T. Dough Temple III. He was parked at the far end. I made Doug several props over the next few years and for the next five or so years, he sent me a shoebox full of peanuts every year for Christmas..
I hadn't heard from him or seen him in years.

Memories of Doug from the Mid '70's
A crew cut in the '70's when everyone else had longer hair....ran a Toop BSH with a vented transom, the transom of which I saw a lot while racing against him in a combined BSH & 25SSH field...while unpacking once at a race early in the season he said something like, "this is the first time I've had this out of the barn since I put it away last year" and judging by the layer of dust I saw on the boats and trailer he wasn't kidding; he then went on to finish 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in his two classes like he had been practicing all spring...brought his family to the races in his pickup truck camper; I often wondered how all of them could fit into that camper...once at a race in Hope Mills, NC I found myself to the inside and slightly in front of Doug -- something I wasn't used to -- and I ended up taking a turn a bit wide which pushed him into some vegetation on the edge of the lake; Doug took his hand off the steering wheel and calmly pointed to our left as if to say, "that's where we're supposed to be"; he never said a mean word to me about the incident.

True Gentlman
Doug was just a gentleman, the kind of person that this country is built upon. Too many fond memories to repeat them all. Hard worker on the farm and loved boat racing. I will share that he pulled-up his son Tom's turn fin in a JSH when we were kids in order to gain speed. I do not recall if Tom went any faster, but he sure could not turn!! We all had a great laugh. I also recall that it was necessary to stop a BSR heat at Camden because the pig caught fire!! The priority was the pig that Doug and Billy Winstead were cooking. Rest in piece.David WeaverComment

Truly,a gentleman on shore and a true competitor on the water. We tangled many times in "our" classes.You always knew he would give you the "proper" room to turn but no more! Last time I saw Doug was at Camden. Hadn't changed a bit.A Great representitive for boat racing and Region 4. Rest in peace Doug.

Still Looking For Pictures
I have very few photos from the mid '70s and it doesn't help that I've misplaced one of my scrapbooks. I know I don't have any photos of Doug in it, but I'm thinking I have a snapshot of his trailer, with the boats on it, from 1973 or so. I keep thinking I've seen the "Silly Billy" BSR in a photo so this would be the one.
Another photo I'm searching for is from my first ever BSR race at the Swansboro (NC) Mullet Festival in 1974. Behind me, and slightly out of focus, you can see Doug in his boat. When it matters, I explain to folks looking at the photo that I'm not actually in front of Doug. In fact I think he won the heat. He and the rest of the pack had to complete an additional lap waiting for me to finish the race because I was so far behind...

David, that one is fact. He and Jack Stroud also rebuilt motor and cranced it in their metal trash can full of water to tast it.
