Safe Harbor Movie

The Hallmark channel will be playing the movie Safe Harbor tonight at 9:00PM EST. This is the organization that Bill Walker works so closely with. (there are no raceboats in the movie) Bill Walker helped these troubled teens build hydros that were run at Jesup Ga last year. The movie gives a good view of what the organization does for troubled youth.

You occaisionally see ads in the propeller magazine looking for boats and hardware for these youngsters. Several racers have donated in the past.

Safe Harbor Boys Home is in big trouble.

A lot of their regular donors were under the impression that Safe Harbor got big royalties or a fee for the movie and stopped their regular donations.

They did not get any compensation of any type for the movie. They authorised the movie to advertise their program and what it does.

With the downturn in the economy and the decrease in their donor base they have had to reduce the number of kids in the program by 50%.

The Safe Harbor Boys Home takes high risk kids and helps them finish their high school education. At the same time the kids are taught their choice of a variety of trades concentrating on the marine services industry.

The boys all live on boats. They go to school 4 hours a day and attend in-house vocational/technical training the rest of the time.

The program boasts a +90% success rate defined as the former student is employed and not in jail for 3 years after they are finished with the program.

They accomplish this without use of any Federal, State, or Local government funding of any sort. It is all private donations.

Great program

I donated two boats to this organization in the past.

Pops Trollian was also a big advocate of this program and put me onto them. Rest in peace Pops.
