I got a call at 5 this morning (Thur) advising of Skipper's passing. I had a call last Thur from Vicki and she said that he had had a heart attack the previous Sat. He was at home and ready to see people so I flew down Sat to visit and came home to Texas Tues. I got to say a very unhurried goodby to a lifelong friend and mentor. He was amazingly alert and full of humor while I was there but I believe he fully understood what his chances were. Tuesday morning I said my goodby and it was all I could do to keep from losing it but was able to pull it off. I'm forever grateful for the advise and guidance he has given me through the years. One could do no better than to have Dick Smith as a friend and mentor. I will miss him but never forget the great times as a grade school student, an employee of his, and lifelong friend. What a man!

I must also comment on the love Vicki has given him through these tough times and the most recent episodes. Her goal was to keep him happy during these times and she did just that. I thank her so much for calling me last week so I could spend some valuable time with him. I will always cherish the last few days with him. He was alert and in total mental control. That's how I want to remember him. Jack

I had driven up on Monday to see Skipper for what was seeming to be the last time. He was in great spirits, with that same warm smile and sense of humor that could light up a room. Typical Skipper, just a little less energy. He passed away after a great life at the age of 93, while resting in his own bed comfortably. Rest in Peace Skipper.

                          Sad news

Our deepest condolences to Vicki, Matt and family. Skipper was a great friend, we will truly miss him. He has always been a fixture at our races. What a great example to all of us, always wearing a big smile and excited to be at the races. It's nice to know he had a great life and enjoyed every day of it! One of the best descriptions I have always thought of Skipper was he was a "Class Act".
                          Rest in peace Skipper.
