  • Cletah Lovelace Passes

Cletah Lovelace, wife of former APBA member Richard "Dick" Lovelace, both of Columbus, Indiana, passed away Sunday after a battle with cancer. Dick was a former NOA and APBA member who was a multi-time national champion and record-holder in the C and D Stock Runabout Classes in the 1960's, 70's and 80's. Dick made a come-back in the early 1990's with his rollup Stippich runabout and was still a force to be reckoned with even then. He was one of the few "masters" of the large roll-up runabout.

Cletah was a true boat-racing wife. She loved the sport because her husband did and made it enjoyable for everyone around her. Cletah also successfully helped her husband create and run an electrical contracting business which operates to this day in Columbus.

The Lovelace family was and is very close to the Hearn family. We spent many spring breaks at Lake Mattie in central Florida cooking out in the orange groves after a full day of boat testing. We used to do this for an entire week every spring.

Dick and Cletah had one daughter, Shelly, whose husband operates Lovelace Electric currently.

God Speed, Cletah, and congratulations on a life well-lived. Edward.
