  • Hinton Post card on eBay

I won the first Hinton postcard on eBay ... apparently the seller has more of them, so don't bid crazy like I did, you will probably get another chance.

    Here's the regular view:

Here is a zoom in of the major part of the center of the card:

    BSH number 277 M

can anyone tell the year and driver?

Farther to the left of the first view

    Pretty sure...

It's Tom Sutherland (now 40M) in his first year of racing. Possibly 1969.

      Johnson Racing Team

The blue trailer box with the rounded ends was our trailer, Hustler and Hard Roller racing team. The boat on the stands in the water is Harry Schiffman, Z-33 hard Roller. That was his Marchetti B-Alky. On the shore beside the trailer is harry's other Marchetti A-alky and my Dad's (Randy Johnson) Z-11 D-alky Marchetti. That is also harry schiffman's blue LeSabre buick beside the Marchetti.
I also see my grandfather Hassell Johnson standing behind the trailer box. I believe this was our Region 4 race in 1970.

Many changes in 40 yrs. All shovel noses, 90% Sid, Swift or Marchetti. All Mercs, and a few HRs.
No easy-ups, motor homes, big van trailers, boat-carts, cut suits..........

          Marc,

I'm wondering if this was actually pre-1973? I'm asking because I do not see our JSH boat anywhere, do you see it? In 1973 we were running the Bowson boat if I remember correctly, I think I ran the Frank Pearson boat-barge in 1972 only. What do you think? And, is that Harry bending over his boat?

            Tom Sutherland

The driver in the boat is Tom Sutherland. It is in 1970 at Hinton West Virginia in the fall. It is the only year that dad had that number (277M). He is driving a Sid Craft that he bought in Michigan from Melvin Hoskins for $125. It was his first boat, you can see the white stripes on his helmet. When he went to the Nationals in Hinton in 76 he discovered the postcard at a souvenir stand at the **** and bought every one they had. When we went to the nationals in Hinton in 87 we walked into the drug store and unbelievably they were still selling them! We bought another 10-15 of them....

If you don't mind me asking how much did it go for on EBAY? I have 5-10 of them around here somewhere. Maybe I can sell enough to buy a Sidewinder.

              1970

As Dean pointed out, 1970 is was...... I would have been 7 years old and you would have been 9, neither of us would have started racing yet. Oh yes the Bowson boat....

This Hinton race was definately in the fall. It was always Labor Day weekend when it wasn't the Nationals. I can barely even remember the 1969 Nationals, but I remember my Dad taking me to watch (He ran only alkys) because my Grandfather was the Chief Inspector there. That's where I saw my first 60J too.

The first one went for $31, the second for $7.50 ... the third will probably sell for $5 ... the 4th ???
