  • Which is better ?

Maybe racers can solve a dispute. Which is a better fuel system cleaner for cars, Seafoam of Lucas Oil fuel system cleaner ? Weigh in !

I have had very good luck with Seafoam.
I stick some in the tank, some in the oil, and dump a big gulp of it in the vaccum hose going to the power brake booster. (As per the instructions) It has really helped my 'ol van.
I've never tried Lucas oil fuel system cleaner.

      Car Additives

Seafoam is high in alcohol and there is already enough of that in the fuel we buy so I have stayed away from it. Here is the Seafoam MSDS, note that IPA = isopropal alchohol

      http://www.montanajacks.com/msds/seafoam-msds.pdf

I prefer fuel additives that are alchohol free like Chevron Techron Fuel system and injector cleaner, Prestone Fuel Injector cleaner and others. Check out the MSDS and look for alcohol in the chemicals. Here are MSDS links:

      http://www.primeautomotive.com/MSDS.html

Some of the chemicals used are complex names and will require a cross reference to determine if they are alchohol based. Some of the products chemicals are not completly listed in the MSDS because propriatory and therefore its your choice to use them, Caveat Emptor.

I like SeaFoam. I dump a can in both cars every six months or so as a preventative measure. But I also run only Shell Premium in my cars, so I think there might be some benefit there as well (if you believe their clever marketing).

I was listening to a radio talk show about ten years back, (it was the Shade Tree Mechanic guys) Sam Memolo said the same about alcohol based products and only uses Chevron additive with Techroline. I have used ever since in my fleet of ten or more cargo vans with no major repairs. Vehicals range from 20,000 to 540,000 miles on same motor, all GMC 8 cyl. So far so good and you can buy at Costco for about $12 a 4-pack. Great question!
